The Doll is the second boss in EarthBound Beginnings after the Lamp. It can only be encountered at the very beginning of the game in Mimmie's room when a poltergeist is occurring. It only attacks physically. After defeating it, Ninten inspects the doll and finds a music box inside it, which contains the first tune of the Eight Melodies. This enemy's battle theme is Battle with a Dangerous Foe.
Defensively, the Doll has 12 HP and 5 DEFENSE. Offensively, it has 4 OFFENSE, 3 FIGHT, and 5 SPEED. Its resilience to Status Ailments is 1 WISDOM, 1 STRENGTH, and 1 FORCE (The player does not have access to status-inflicting attacks yet.). It drops 10 EXP and $50 when defeated.
Ninten starts off with at least 5 in every stat. He overpowers or ties with the Doll in every value.
Trivia
- The Doll is twice as resilient as the Lamp, having 12 HP instead of 6, and has the same DEFENSE. It is slightly offensively stronger than the Lamp in general, being 1 OFFENSE higher and 2 FIGHTs higher, but boasts the same SPEED. It is 2 WISDOMs lower, 2 STRENGTHs lower, and is 2 FORCEs lower, but this is redundant as the player cannot inflict any status ailments at this part of the game.
- This boss fight is unskippable. Ninten's mom will block the door until the Doll is defeated.
- The Doll is one of the few enemies in Mother with an overworld sprite.
- The Doll appears to be heavily based off of the world-famous Kewpie doll.
- Ninten is guaranteed to level up after defeating the boss because of his low XP and because he cannot skip it.
- The first melody, on the other hand, can be skipped and obtained later. Mimmie will remind you to check it until you’ve listened to the recording.
- In the companion guide, he is called "Doll" in all versions of the game.
- His description reads, "Runs amok in Mimmie's room (that's the lead character's sister). As with the Lampstand, this is the poltergeist activity's doing. He's also a key enemy who nets you the first melody.".
