Hippie

EarthBound Beginnings

The Hippie is an enemy in EarthBound Beginnings. It can be encountered at the beginning of the game in Podunk. It attacks physically, has a chance to waste a move, and sometimes uses the Bullhorn to either decrease a member's FIGHT or increase a member's OFFENSE for the duration of the battle. This enemy's battle theme is Hippie Battle.

Defensively, The Hippie has 25 HP and 14 DEFENSE. Offensively, it has 8 OFFENSE, 3 FIGHT, and 6 SPEED. Its resilience to Status Ailments is 1 WISDOM, 1 STRENGTH, and 3 FORCE. It drops 6 EXP and $35 when defeated.

Ninten starts off with at least 7 in every stat after fighting the Doll. It is recommended to equip the Plastic Bat due to Ninten's low level early on. Until the next level up, The Hippie will be ahead in overall resilience and offensive strength, making this among the most difficult enemies to encounter early on.

Trivia

  • The Hippie's habit of wasting turns may be a reference to real-life hippies being non-violent.
  • The Hippie's battle theme is inspired by Chuck Berry's song Johnny B. Goode. A remixed version of the battle theme can be heard in EarthBound in fights against New Age Retro Hippies and Frank Fly, and can again be heard in the Mother 3 versions of the song called Rock and Roll (Mild) and Rock and Roll (Spicy).
  • This is the very first enemy the player can come across with the “Hippie Battle” theme and is the only enemy in the entire game to have a song name based around them (other than Giegue).
  • The Hippie is slightly stronger in resilience than the Crow, having 25 HP instead of 22, and is 2 DEFENSEs higher. It is slightly offensively weaker than the Crow, boasting the same OFFENSE, is 5 FIGHTs lower, and is 6 SPEEDs lower. It has the same WISDOM, is 2 STRENGTHs lower, and is 7 FORCEs lower.
  • EarthBound's equivalent to The Hippie is the New Age Retro Hippie. It is found in Twoson. It has significantly more HP and also has a chance of wasting a move, as well as occasionally solidifying a member, functioning differently than in EarthBound Beginnings. Mother 3 lacks an equivalent enemy.
  • In the companion guide, he is called "Young Man" in Mother, "The Hippie" in EarthBound Beginnings, and "Hippie" in Mother 1 + 2.
    • Their description reads, "Prowls around from your Home to the Thanksgiving area. He carries a Magic Megaphone, which he uses at every opportunity to persuade you. Also likes to meditate. He'll even flare up in unprovoked anger. A former hippie?".
