"Hey, we're still the baddest ogres in the land. No one can beat us." |
Goz (ゴズ Gozu) is a large ogre in charge of Hell alongside Mez. King Yemma is his boss and also the only oni who is stronger than Goz. In original Japanese, Goz speaks with adding おに ("oni") to the end of each sentence.
Appearance
Goz's skin is blue, he has purple hair, and one horn. He wears a white tank top & shorts, and blue wristbands and shoes.
Personality
Goz is playful and has a somewhat mischievous personality as he enjoys teasing and challenging others. Despite his intimidating appearance, he has a humorous and lighthearted side, often engaging in antics with Mez. Goz is loyal to his duties in Hell but is not above showing fear when faced with powerful adversaries, such as Cell and his group of villains.
Biography
Dragon Ball Z
Saiyan Saga
In the anime, Goz stops Goku from eating the Ensenji by hitting him with a spiked club. Then, Goz challenges him to wrestling match and toys with him for some time, pretending to help him leave Hell, such as Goz's Flying Machine.[1]
Majin Buu Saga

In the anime, Goz and Mez are shown to be in hiding from Cell, King Cold, Frieza, and the Ginyu Force. It was also implied in this scene that they would have told Cell and his rioters how to escape from Hell had they caught them in order to save their own lives, as they mentioned that they would tell them where the secret lair was when they thought Goku and Pikkon were with Cell and his rebels. They soon recognize Goku and informed him where the villains went.[2]
In the anime, Goz reappears watching the fight between Kid Buu and Goku (and were also impressed by Kid Buu's putting up a fight).[3][4][5]
Dragon Ball GT
Super 17 Saga
Goz and Mez briefly reappear.

Trivia
- Goz is named after and based on one of two demon generals who guard the gates of Hell, in Japanese Buddhism, named "Gozu" (牛頭), also known as "Ox-Head".
- He's also possibly also named after the Japanese urban legend "Gozu" (牛頭, "Cow Head"), also known as "Ox Head", which is said to be the gatekeeper of hell in some variations of the legend.
- Jose Luis Castañeda provides the voice of Goz in the Latin American dub, except in the episode "Warriors of the Dead" when Cell and his fellow villain rioters wreak havoc in Hell. This is probably because Castañeda also voiced King Cold and Burter and both appeared in that same episode. That would make him the third character in the same scene so the change may have been intentional.
