Holly Short is one of the protagonists of the 2020 film Artemis Fowl and a Captain in the LEP.
Background
Personality
Holly Short was a driven individual and determined to be the best in the Lower Elements Police. Although skilled at the tools of her trade, her greatest assets were quick wit and unorthodox methods of problem-solving. Her skills were useful for many situations, but nothing could quite prepare her for Artemis Fowl.
At one point, her father Beechwood Short, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Due to a small mistake at her job for the L.E.P., she got stuck doing tedious work on a prison transport for weeks. Commander Root then asks Holly to track a troll, but not engage one on the surface. She is shot with a tranquilizer dart by Artemis Fowl II and captured while trying to use an acorn to recharge her magic. However, after she escapes at Fowl Manor, she discovers Artemis with Mulch Diggums and Butler, staring at the Aculos, the most valuable fairy treasure of all, inside a safe, a piece of paper beside it. After reading the paper, Holly realizes that both of their fathers were partners and provides Artemis with the information he needs to escape the bio-bomb used on Fowl Manor.
Role in the film
Holly Short is first seen exiting a futuristic vehicle where a voice dispatch tells her about two minutes of security briefing just as she passes by a screen of a news report of the disappearance of the Aculos. Holly then approaches Mulch Diggums telling him that he is into tunneling and entering, telling him about his duty as a con artist, telling her that if she and Mulch would make a great team but after Holly realizes that he took his wallet, she becomes furious of him just as she walks away. She then approaches Commander Root, telling her that she has a new lead on her father at the Hill of Tara, which Root denies, telling Holly that she has her whole life ahead of her, giving her plenty of missions to fly, telling her to let the soldiers take care of the Aculos.
Holly approaches Foaly sending her on a task to stop a troll on the surface where she boards an escape pod. As Holly is launched into the surface, she finds a massive troll attacking a girl during a wedding ceremony at Martina Franca, which Holly takes him on just as she protects a girl from the troll to which during the ambush, Foaly loads the Time Freeze which Holly ties up the troll while Foaly activates the Time Freeze to stop the troll, just as various L.E.P. agents fix the damage the troll caused just as Holly and the other fairies withdraw, followed by the troll being taken out of the festival. She then flies to the Hill of Tara at Ireland at the area where Domovoi was tasked to keep an eye out for fairies where Artemis Jr. tells Domovoi Butler that fairies are real where she finds a name tag containing Beechwood's name to which Domovoi fires a dart at her, causing Holly to lose contact between Foaly and Commander Root.
The next day, Holly finds herself at the Fowl Manor where she is caged at the center of the kitchen, feeling uncomfortable about this. Juliet Butler then attempts to serve her food only for Artemis to approach her who is uncomfortable of being placed in a cage, fearing that the other fairies might go after him. Just as Artemis takes Holly's equipment, Root commands her to give her the Time Freeze immediately before she resigns. Just as Artemis returns to Holly after negotiating with Root, Holly thinks that Artemis is outsmarting all fairies which Artemis tells her that his father was kidnapped. Holly recaps that her father was ambushed at the Hill of Tara for stealing the Aculos which Artemis tells her that she read from her father's journal about the Aculos, centered around a tale about a fairy who swore to protect it and the fairy Artemis is talking about is Beechwood, Holly's deceased father who knew how dangerous the Aculos can be and can open a portal between both worlds. She then arrives at the portrait gallery where Mulch uncovers the Aculos, the most powerful treasure in the fairy world, warning Artemis that this object is extremely dangerous to use.
Later when a group of L.E.P.RECON forces arrive with the troll captured, Holly and the rest of the survivors inside Fowl Manor are assaulted by the troll who also destroys Holly's cage while Holly gets herself stuck on a chandelier, though Dom suddenly gets injured in the process after the troll became foiled after falling from high below. Holly's officers then unblock Holly's magic which Briar Cudgeon blocked in the first place in order to revive Dom, which Dom successfully comes back to life. Artemis then reconciles with Holly before planning to rescue is father. Using the incantation on the Aculos as instructed by Holly, Artemis manages to rescue his father from Opal Koboi where he approaches Holly, telling her that her father was a great hero just before Holly leaves to return to Haven City. Commander Root then praises Holly for her mission accomplished, telling her that Haven City is the place she is needed to save the world of fairies, thanks to the Aculos recovered.
At the end of the film, Holly is seen flying with the helicopter piloted by Artemis Sr., Artemis Jr., and Domovoi planning to stop Koboi's associates.
