Fowl Manor is a location in the 2020 Disney+ original film Artemis Fowl. It is the home of the Fowl family.
Background
Fowl Manor is the home of the Fowl family located in the Irish countryside. Within this area is a large library where the Fowls did their operations. This house was located on the coast of Ireland and was the only area inhabited by humans near the Hill of Tara. It was also the place where the LEP siege took place as well as the attempt to rescue Holly Short.
Development
Production designer Jim Clay described that while creating Fowl Manor, he stated that Eoin Colfer's original Artemis Fowl books had a scary and gothic theme in Ireland, which the production team decided to tone down the horror, albeit with something fastening inside with more interesting spaces for the rest of the action. The Fowl Manor set was built from the ground up for the film where the crew was able to travel around the house in one shot while imagining Artemis Fowl Sr. and the Fowls who built their manor; effectively, the crew also built a real house made of steel istructure clad in timber and plaster render.
According to Colfer, he stated that he was thrilled that Fowl Manor was not only recreated, but reimagined, making it an emotional experience for Artemis Fowl Jr. Ferdia Shaw, the actor who played Artemis Jr., described the construction of Fowl Manor to be "crazy" with a large amount of detail the production team placed into it, claiming that his favorite room is Artemis Jr.'s bedroom. The entire house was also stocked with leatherbound books in order to give the house the atmosphere. The chandelier featuring a battle against the troll was a real chandelier that weighed one-and-a-half tons[1].
Role in the film
Artemis Fowl Sr. and his son Artemis Fowl Jr. lived within Fowl Manor protected by Domovoi Butler. This home was the former home of the late Angeline Fowl who died before the events of the film. Throughout the Fowls' lives, Artemis Sr. would tell a happy bedtime story to his son Artemis Jr. a tale of the fairies, although Artemis Jr. did not believe in the stories at first. However, at one point, Artemis was often busy with his business duty, which bothered Artemis Jr. who became worried of his father who suddenly went missing.
Following the disappearance of Artemis Sr., Artemis Jr. received a call from a mysterious figure telling him that if he wanted to get his father back, he would need to bring a very precious object known as the "Aculos". Domovoi Butler then showed Artemis Jr. a secret area, the library, where Artemis Sr. held a number of fairy artifacts which he was keeping safe throughout his life. When Artemis Jr. was exploring his father's library, he discovered his father's journal, The Irish Blessing, which revealed his logs containing past events of when Artemis Sr. having worked with Holly's father, Beechwood Short, who was tracking down the Aculos while facing the most-feared fairy of all time, Opal Koboi.
Later when Holly Short was captured, Fowl Manor started to become the site of a siege led by L.E.P.RECON planning a Time Freeze to siege the area where Holly was captured. However, throughout the siege, Domovoi fired an arrow at the capsule, destabilizing it thanks to a well-shot from him. Artemis Jr. then ordered a negotiation where he negotiated with Commander Root of L.E.P.RECON who entered the manor; however, she warned Artemis that she did not pay ransoms. Root left the manor and planned to contact Mulch Diggums to rescue Holly who is trapped in her cage. Mulch managed to enter Fowl Manor, but could not resist cracking, especially in the portrait galley. Throughout his mission, Mulch found a portrait of Artemis' father and behind it is a safe where everyone had been looking for the whole time: the Aculos.
Later, Briar Cudgeon summoned a troll to destroy Fowl Manor, much to Commander Root's warnings as Cudgeon was secretly working for Opal Koboi. As the troll was sent into the manor, he started causing massive havoc inside Fowl Manor; however, the troll was either knocked unconscious or dead, although Domovoi was injured in the process while distracting the troll. With Domovoi injured, Holly Short managed to heal Dom after a L.E.P.RECON officer unblocked Holly's magic which Cudgeon blocked in the first place. However, the Time Freeze collapsed, forcing the surviving L.E.P.RECON members to evacuate immediately. Holly returned to Fowl Manor and used the power of the Aculos to bring Artemis' father back to his house just before Opal Koboi could kill him, resulting Koboi to react in a breakdown. With Artemis back home, Artemis Sr. reunited with his son who introduced him to Holly Short, telling her that his father sacrificed his life to save her where it was explained that Beechwood was a hero who gave him a list of Koboi's accomplices which he was unable to pronounce sharing a condolence to Holly before she leaves as Artemis Sr. reunites with Dom.
Some time later, a large contingent of media was gathered outside Fowl Manor where neither of the Fowls were concerned. Just before leaving, Artemis Sr. gave his son a set of keys for their helicopter while Artemis Jr. found a quiet place, telling Opal Koboi that she lost, planning to go after her. The Fowls and Domovoi Butler leave Fowl Manor via helicopter to stop Opal Koboi's associates while Dom's niece Juliet was watching them leave via window.
