Gentleman

Gentleman (real name ? ? ?)[1] is a playable character in Contra: Rogue Corps. He is a brain bug alien raised by humans. He feels the rest of the team are ill-mannered and vulgar, especially the panda. He often argues over table manners and the neatest and most efficient way to dispatch the enemy.

He was voiced by Raymond F. Pental.

History

Member of the Rogue Corps squad.

A brain-type of bug alien, capture by humans and was raised as an experiment.

He attaches importance to always behave like a well-educated person and have good manners. He is also obsessed with cleanliness.

He is a caterpillar-type of bug and can only move very slowly, but he got himself some high-tech robotic arms and legs that allows him to move with agility.

He loves tea, ikebana, and manage to stay calm in chaotic situations.
~ Description from the official Contra: Rogue Corps website

The Gentleman is an alien creature who was raised by humans and held inside a container in a laboratory (probably collected during the Alien Wars). In his base appearance, he appears somewhat like a Grub with tiny arms growing. He is able to move around as a bi-pedal humanoid shape thanks to cybernetic limbs. Making honor to his name and despite his grotesque appearance (at least by human eyes), he is very well mannered, well spoken, and well educated. Nonetheless, his alien biology also allows him to employ disturbing methods to deal with his enemies on a personal level, such as inserting his tongue into an individual's mouth and then inject some sort of pressure that ends up bursting its body from the inside.

After General Phoenix fired the untested Vortex Cannon to eradicate the remaining alien forces at the end of the Alien Wars, and which in consequence brought the rise of the Damned City, the general assassinated the President and blamed the Rogue Corps for the murder. The two lead scientists behind the creation of the cannon, Dr. Claude Banks and Dr. Kurt Steiner, were the only ones who witnessed the whole event, so Phoenix had his soldiers to apprehend them and lock them up inside the laboratory and then ordered them to blow up the building to make their deaths look like an accident.

Making futile attempts to escape, Dr. Steiner's attention was brought up by a talking alien specimen that was held inside a container in the laboratory. The creature negotiated with him that if he set him free, he would teach him a way to get out... although the process could be "slightly" painful. Seeing no other option, the doctor agreed. After the doctor presumably provided the creature with a body (apparently, of another unknown creature for it control as a parasite) and other mechanical parts, the Gentleman, who was the nickname of this alien, proceeded to remove Dr. Steiner's brain and implanted it inside the body of a cybernetic panda bear that was also in the laboratory. The operation was a success, and the panda soon gained consciousness through the use of the new organ. The powerful beast then tore up a hole through a wall and both managed to escape the building just as the bomb was about to go off.

Once outside, the duo found themselves trapped in the ruins that comprised the Damned City. Starting to lose hope to escape, the Rogue Corps carrier, The Guillotine, suddenly came to their rescue, and from that day onward, both became members of their force.

Gameplay

Gentleman starts the game with a Level 3 in both Laser guns and Fire guns. His skill is the Micro Black Hole, which leaves behind a large spherical vortex that remains idle, damaging anyone who comes near it or for causing continuous damage to large enemies for a limited time. It also gravitates any enemies nearby, though larger or faster enemies will try to resist the gravitational pull.

Gentleman's Finishing Move involves stabbing his victim with his tongue, causing them to inflate and explode. Gentleman is seen using this move in an animated cutscene. In his Beetle Gentleman DLC skin, his Finishing Move is altered. He instead uses his horns to impale his foe, then one of his horns launches the victim into the sky, exploding them to oblivion.

Gentleman's weapon wings DLC shirt bears the F power up. This likely references Gentleman's high proficiency with Fire Guns.

Notes

  • The preview Trailer bears him with the label of "Cultured", referencing his rather polite demeanor.
  • Gentleman can be seen as a parallel to Browny from Contra: Hard Corps. Both are specialized in Laser type weaponry and have some knowledge over technology.

  • Gentleman's Finishing Move where he uses his tongue to kill his enemies is similar to how a xenomorph uses its tongue to kill its prey from the Aliens franchise.
