Ockie

Ockie is a Hadati trapper who lives in the Dimwood in Betrayal at Krondor. He can first be encountered in Chapter 1.

Geography

Ockie lives in a small house near the western exit from the Dimwood. A hollow Stump nearby contains a 97% shell.

Two dead bodies lie in front of the house. On one body, the party finds a +5 Rope and +4 poisoned Rations; on the other, a +1 Shovel and a +1 Armorer's Hammer.

Overview

Ockie, a dour trapper with a heavy Hadati accent, incorrectly blames a witch woman living to the southeast for scaring animals away from his traps. She later describes him as the kind of man who fears what he does not understand.

Chapter 1-3, 6

A voice calls out from the vicinity of the house, telling the party to "stah awah" due to the "jaunt scopions." Unable to parse the message through the speaker's thick Hadati accent, the party ponders whether to approach.

If the party visits his home despite his warning, he opens the door before they can knock and scowls that they shouldn't have come; the dead people in his yard "were all visitin' too." Without mentioning that he has killed the witch's livestock and poisoned her well, he blames her for conjuring giant scorpions that harass anyone who approaches his house, but slams the door in fear as two giant scorpions appear and attack the party.

Each time they knock before confronting the witch, Ockie frantically begs them to stop her before he dies trapped in his house, but retreats in terror, leaving the party to face two more giant scorpions.

If they return after assuaging the witch's concerns, Ockie is not at home.

Chapter 7

If the party visits Ockie's house, they find it abandoned. Inside is the Wooden Chest.

Trivia

  • Unlike other giant scorpions in the game, those around Ockie's house leave no corpses after battle.
  • Although Ockie may be the only Hadati to appear in the game aside from an epitaph on a grave near Tyr-Sog, he does not live near Yabon.
  • The game's strategy guide names this character "Ockie" Neruson, implying that "Ockie" is a nickname, and describes him as "simple in every sense," disliking conversations longer than a few minutes, hunting only within a day's walk of his house, and hating anything he cannot immediately comprehend. It also mentions an Ironjaw Trap which can be obtained from Ockie if the party returns to his house after pacifying the witch. In Version 1.02, Ockie cannot be visited after completing the witch's quest.[1]
