Not to be confused with Wart, the Sub-Boss enemy from Majora's Mask sharing the character's international name from the Mario series.
Mamu is a character in Link's Awakening.[2] He is Wart from the Mario franchise, who is the main antagonist of the 1987 Famicom Disk System title Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, released outside of Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. However, in the case of the Game Boy The Legend of Zelda game, he is not evil and serves as a supporting character for Link.
Mamu himself is a large regal frog who wears a crown on his head and a robe that can scarcely conceal his big belly. He also wears a necklace. Although he is shown to sing in Link's Awakening, he is known for spitting dangerous bubbles in Super Mario Bros. 2.
Biography
Mamu resides in the pond beneath the Signpost Maze.[1] He teaches Link the "Frog's Song of Soul" after paying him 300 Rupees.[3][4] Mamu remarks that the ones who hear the song feel more alive.[5] Mamu cannot be revisited afterwards, as he and his choir are away on tour according to the sign outside the pond.[6]
In Super Mario Bros. 2

In his original source material, Mamu, or Wart, is the game's primary villain, rather than Bowser. His goal in the Mario game is to take over Subcon, a land of dreams (ironically like Koholint Island) where he overthrows the world's king and kidnapped its namesake inhabits, and it is up to Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad to stop him. As the leader of an army called 8 bits, his own henchmen include Birdos, Mouser, Tryclyde, Fryguy, and Clawgrip. During the Final Boss battle against him, Wart is vulnerable to vegetables appearing from the machine thrown at him when his mouth is open shooting bubbles at the protagonists.
Trivia
- "Mamu" is actually the Japanese name for Wart. This was given an indirect reference in Hyrule Warriors with Ganondorf's Mamu palette swap.
- Wart in Link's Awakening is one of several cases of characters from other Nintendo franchises, specifically Super Mario, appearing in a The Legend of Zelda series title as a cameo.
- The official artwork of Mamu is completely different from how the character appears in his source material, looking like an actual frog wearing a robe.
- Strangely, all of Wart's in-game appearances have his eyes closed in a manner as if he is laughing, while official artwork has them open.
- Ironically, in Super Mario Bros. 2, when he takes damage or is ultimately defeated during the final battle, Wart's eyes appear open.
- In Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Advance, Mamu (Wart) as well as his underlings were voiced by the iconic Charles Martinet, who is the longtime former voice actor of Mario.
- In his case, when approached, he speaks "I am the great Wart! Ha ha ha!" before the final battle begins.
- Unlike Bowser and some other recurring Mario antagonists, Mamu never makes a reappearance in any core Super Mario games other than a few cameos since his defeat.
