Ancient Arrows are a special type of Arrow designed specifically for defeating Guardians. They are daggers made from Ancient Technology called Ancient Blades that were repurposed by tying them via rope to Arrows.[1] Robbie created the Ancient Arrows about 40 or 50 years after the Great Calamity.[2] They belong to the Ancient Soldier Gear equipment archetype, which includes all Weapons created by Robbie.[3]
There are a total of nine Treasure Chests containing Ancient Arrows, all found at Hyrule Castle. Three of them contain one Ancient Arrow, five of them contain a bundle of 3 Ancient Arrows, and one contains a bundle of 5 Ancient Arrows.[4][5] Link can also create them in exchange for Ancient Materials, Arrows, and Rupees by using the Ancient Oven, Cherry, at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. They can be purchased individually, or in bundles of three or five. Link can also receive one from Beedle at any Stable, during what he calls Customer Appreciation Day.[6] It is triggered after Link frees his first Divine Beast. If Link is unable to carry more Ancient Arrows, Beedle will be unable to give him his reward.[7]
Ancient Arrows deal moderate damage to Boss, but heavy damage to Guardians. If an Ancient Arrow strikes a Guardian directly in the eye, the Guardian is instantly defeated. If used on enemies other than Guardians and Boss, the Enemy and its Weapons will completely disintegrate. Enemies that disintegrate due to the Ancient Arrow will also not drop any Materials.
Ancient Arrows do not disappear after being shot at an object, allowing Link to retrieve them if he misses an Enemy. Ancient Arrows will penetrate and stick to certain objects, such as wood, and certain Materials, such as Hylian Shrooms. Ancient Arrows can cause ice blocks made from the Cryonis Rune to break, and will instantly blow up Remote Bombs. Ancient Arrows can also be used to instantly dispatch Divine Beast Vah Medoh's Cannons. Ancient Arrows are one of the only means of defeating Dark Beast Ganon, alongside the Light Arrows from the Bow of Light and Twilight Bow as well as Sword Beams from the Master Sword.
Tears of the Kingdom
Ancient arrows as a unique arrow type have been removed from Tears of the Kingdom to make way for the addition of Fuse, which allows players to make their own Ancient arrows by Fusing an arrow with a Ancient Blade or any other appropriate material. After awakening the Sage of Spirit, a Steward construct can be found in the Spirit temple, allowing you to trade 50 Zonaite in exchange for 1 Ancient Blade. This trade can be done repeatedly for easy access to Ancient Blades.
Other Appearances
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
An Ancient Arrow, alongside the Ancient Bow, appears as Link's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When activated, Link pulls out the Ancient Bow and shoots an Ancient Arrow, launching with great knockback any opponent trapped in its range.
