Sega Corporation, or commonly known as Sega (stylized as SEGA, meaning Service Games), is a Japanese video game company founded on June 3, 1960, by Martin Bromley and Richard Stewart. Its international branches, Sega of America and Sega Europe are headquartered in Irvine, California, and London, England.

History

SEGA was firstly started by Bromley, Irving Bromberg, and James Humpert, when they were making mini slot machines for military bases during WWII. In 1952, Bromley would send employees to establish Service Games of Japan to provide slot machines to U.S. bases in Japan, though in 1960, it was dissolved. In 1969, SEGA was sold to Gulf and Western Industries, and released its first video-based game in 1973, called Pong-Tron.

SEGA started to develop a video game system, called the SG-1000, which would sell over 160,000 units in 1983. The Sega Genesis released in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, becoming one of the most popular consoles released by SEGA at the time. SEGA was also competing with Nintendo, mainly with its series of the character, Mario. SEGA released Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991, and has been recognized as the primary mascot of SEGA. The Dreamcast console, another popular console made by SEGA, would be the last console SEGA releases.
