Peter Gene Hernandez (born: October 8, 1985 (1985-10-08) [age 39]),[1] better known by his stage name Bruno Mars,[2] is an American musician based in Los Angeles, California. He is known for his broad variety of music and his music performances.

Early life

Bruno Mars was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States to Peter Hernandez and Bernadette San Pedro Bayot, and was raised in the Waikiki neighborhood of Honolulu. His father is of half Puerto Rican and half Ashkenazi Jewish descent (from Ukraine and Hungary), and is originally from Brooklyn, New York. His mother emigrated from the Philippines to Hawaii, and was of Filipino and Spanish ancestry. Making Mars being of Puerto Rico, Ashkenazi Jewish, Filipino and Spanish descent.[3] Mars moved to Los Angeles, California, United States in 2003 to chase after his dreams of being a musician. After being dropped by Motown Records, Mars signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 2009. In the same year, he co-founded the production team The Smeezingtons, responsible for various successful singles for Mars himself and other artists.[4][5]

Career

In an interview with Piers Morgan, Bruno mentioned Amy Winehouse and how he was inspired by her work.[6][7]

Mars' popularity started to explode in 2010, when he helped release his first singles: "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy, both of which featured his vocals on the hooks. His debut studio album Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010), peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and reached number one in Canada, Germany, Netherlands, and United Kingdom. It spawned the international number-one singles "Just the Way You Are", which won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, "Grenade" and "The Lazy Song". In 2011, Mars recorded the his hit song "It Will Rain" for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1.

Bruno Mars' 2024 duets "Die with a Smile" (with Lady Gaga) and "Apt." (with Rosé from Blackpink) were a total of 24 weeks atop the Billboard Global 200.[8]

Bruno is the first artist in history to reach 150 million monthly listeners on Spotify.[9][10]

Controversy

In 2010, Bruno Mars was arrested for drug possession in Las Vegas. He pleaded guilty and participated in a drug education program, paid fines, and performed community service to address the incident. Since then, he has not had any drug-related incidents cloud his career.[11]
