Etymology
"Tsuki no yami" translates as Darkness of the Moon.
"Lunie" might be a corruption on the female name "Luna" (the Latin word for Lunar meaning the moon).
"Seleno" is a prefix of Greek origin, meaning "moon"
Origin
Lunie is most likely is based on the Shinto moon deity Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto. Tsukuyomi was born from the right eye of the primeval being Izanagi during Izanagi's cleansing of himself during his trek into Yomi to see his deceased wife Izanami.
As the moon god, he initially lived in the Heavens with his sister, Amaterasu the Sun Goddess, until he killed the Food Goddess Uke Mochi when she prepared a feast in a nauseating manner, and since then both deities live in separate parts of the sky.
Trivia
Lunie does not have his real life medal counterpart.
Lunie's "random" nicknames are: Rabbit, Yozora, Darkside and Remus.
The nickname "Rabbit" is most likely a reference to the common japanese folklore tale of rabbits living on the moon, referenced many other times throughout the franchise, like in Yo-kai Watch Blasters (video game), in which rabbits can be seen making mochi on the moon during the Captain Thunder boss fight.
