Pandas are animals native to China, Earth and appear in Season 7. Their habitat is in the bamboo forest of the Qinling Mountains.
Overview
They are members of the bear family. Their diet consists primarily of bamboo shoots and leaves.[1] Though they do consume other vegetation, fish, and small mammals, it is not often.[1] Their habitat is on the rainy and misty mountains of China, at high elevations and in densely populated bamboo forests.[1]
Appearance
In the series, these pandas are small, have black and white fur, sharp claws, and eye colors of lavender, light-blue and -green. They have a round tail.
Pre-series
The pandas are threatened by extinction due to human irresponsibility and selfishness. Mei Li, growing ever distrustful and disdain towards her fellow humans, chose to protect the pandas by living among them alone. The pandas and her form a close bond and spend their time together with Mei Li serving as their guardian.
Series
Season 7
In "The Unicorn's Secret," the river is contaminated by wild magic and changes Elas into an aggressive monster. Their endangerment is sensed by Roxy's yaffles who tell the Fairy of Animals, who in turn tell the Winx. A new mission to save the pandas is established. They transform into their Butterflix and head over to China.
Meanwhile, the pandas and Mei Li carry about their regular day with dance. But suddenly, the wind shifts and the pandas and Mei Li become highly alert. Mei Li bravely tells the pandas to get behind her so that she could shield them from the incoming danger. Mei Li spots Stella flying and she throws her fan at her. This knocks the fairy down, allowing Mei Li to confront her. She is not convinced when the fairies tell her that they are also here to protect the pandas. Stella returns her fan but it does not lower her guard. Then, the wind shifts again and is more unsettling than when the Winx arrived. Then, the corrupted Elas attacks them, sending sharp bamboo shoots at them. The bamboo shoots cage everyone in, including the pandas, with the exception of Bloom and Mei Li who were able to evade them. Though they end up separated from the group. The pandas remain stuck there until Elas is freed from the wild magic's control and bonds with Bloom.
The panda are still not safe due to the river's contamination of wild magic. However, Elas purifies the river and therefore, it is no longer endangering the pandas. With her protection no longer needed, Mei Li and the pandas say their bittersweet and tearful goodbyes to one another.
Trivia
- The pandas in the series are the size of cubs, as adult pandas are at least 5 feet (152.4 centimeters) and weigh around 300 pounds.[1]
- These pandas should actually be called Qinling pandas because they only live in the Qinling Mountains.[2]
- Qinling pandas are identical to the giant panda but have dark brown or light brown markings. They also have a smaller head than the giant panda.[2]
