Prickle

Prickle is an adult female SandWing who was introduced in Darkness of Dragons. She is Palm's identical twin sister, and was imprisoned by Queen Oasis after being mistaken for Palm, who was a SandWing fugitive at the time. She is currently imprisoned within the dungeons of the SandWing stronghold.

Description

Prickle has sharp eyes and patterns of light brown scales freckled across her paler yellow scales. She is lean and weathered, and wears earrings made of glittering fire opal.^[1] After her imprisonment, she became tortured-looking.^[2]

Personality

Prickle often erupts into strange, gibbering wails, and is considered to be mad; she attacks anyone who goes near her chains or into her cell.^[3] She is frantic^[2] and only has occasional, thin moments of clarity.^[4]

Before her imprisonment, Prickle spoke acerbically. She appeared cold, self-righteous, heartless, and condescending.^[1]

Darkness of Dragons

In the prologue, Palm appeared at the door of Prickle's hut after being chased by a fraction of the SandWing army, where Prickle asked Palm why she should let her in. After a quick discussion, Palm reluctantly gave her earrings to Prickle, saying that Smolder gave them to her. This brought up a discussion about Smolder, Prickle disliked him and Palm defended him. During their talk, the soldiers that were chasing Palm broke into Prickle's hut. They took Prickle away, thinking that she was Palm because she was wearing her earrings. Palm recognized one of the soldiers, Agave; who knew that they captured the wrong dragon, but said nothing as the soldier was a former friend of Palm. While Smolder and Onyx were hiding from the sandstorm that Qibli caused, after the attempted assassination of Queen Thorn, Prickle began screaming at them from her cell about her innocence and her plans of vengeance against Palm. Thorn explained that they would have freed her, but when her soldiers tried to approach the cell, she attacked them, so they decided to leave her in the cell. Thorn also noted she was likely starved many times in the past by Burn's negligence of prisoners.

When Fierceteeth was trying to get Saguaro to hear her story, she mentioned a "gibbering mad SandWing a few cages down who never shuts up," referring to Prickle.

Relationships

Palm

Palm and her twin sister had a rocky relationship. Even before Prickle's unfair imprisonment, the two sisters did not seem to get along, and Prickle only agreed to help Palm to gain the fire opal earrings that Smolder had given her.^[1] In her current state, Prickle despises Palm for her imprisonment,^[2] and Palm had several nightmares about Prickle's imprisonment before her death.^[4] Palm did not want to let the guards take Prickle, but still chose Onyx and her own safety over her sister.^[1]
