John is a student in Mrs. Jewls' class who is a smart student who could only read words written upside down, until he got his brain flipped. He is in both the books and cartoon.
Personality
In the books, only his brain was flipped upside-down, and he could never stand on his head, but the cartoon shows him being upside-down altogether. He is also mentioned to be one of the smartest students in class.
Appearance
In the books, John is a student with a round head. He has short, light brown hair. In the cartoon, he has medium-length dark blue hair. His skin is a tan color. He has a large nose and small eyes. He wears a creme-coloured shirt and magenta-colored vest. His pants are a tealish-blue. He has dark teal sneakers with a white sole and laces. In the cartoon, he is always standing on his head.
Major Roles
- The seventeenth chapter of Sideways Stories from Wayside School was called "John", and featured the character trying to stand on his head so he could read the blackboard, but ultimately failing.
- The 24th chapter of Wayside School is Falling Down is entitled "Another Story About Potatoes" and features John helping Joe shape his potato salad into a face, only to have it be shaped like Mrs. Gorf.
- In the cartoon, the episode "Upside Down John" focuses on this character's difficulties with being upside-down, only to discover how his position helped humankind.
