Joe is a student in Mrs. Jewls' class. He is a kid which is known to have strange mathematical methods, but somehow always gets the correct answer. His best friend is John.
Appearance
In the books, There are exactly 55,006 hairs on his head, which is more hairs than Dana has. He is shorter than Myron and Dameon. In the cartoon, He has a big orange afro, which covers his eyes, which are only shown in a few episodes. He wears a white T-shirt with a blue collar and blue sleves, and green pants. His sneakers are blue with white soles.
Personality
In the books, Joe is a strange student who seems to be bad at math, but always gets the answers right. As revealed later on, it is just possible that he has strange methods. He seems to enjoy tagging along with John and does whatever he does, including teasing Dana on some instances, and joining him for lunch during "Another Story About Potatoes". In the cartoon, Joe is fairly fond of nature, and tries to protect many wild animals during Mr. Kidswatter's lawn beautification project. Often, he uses his hair to store things, such as his lunch in "Oh, Brother", or various forms of wildlife in "Joe 'N' Fro".
Major Roles
- In Sideways Stories from Wayside School, a chapter called "Joe" demonstrates Joe's difficulty with counting. He is kept in after recess by Mrs. Jewls, who wants to help him learn how. After waking up, he is able to count and counts the amounts of hairs on his head.
- In Wayside School is Falling Down, a chapter called "Another Story About Potatoes" has Joe forget his meal, so he gets potato salad from Mrs. Gorf. However, the potato salad turns out to be shaped like Mrs. Gorf, though, so he and John must eat the rest.
- In the cartoon, he is featured in an episode entitled "Joe 'N' Fro", which shows that his large afro apparently can store wildlife, and this leads to him ruining Principal Kidswatter's gazebo project.

- Joe is the first student to appear in the series.
