Ancient Healer

Heavy melee that applies damage reduction buff to allies.

Ancient Healer is an Infested heavy unit that provides healing to its allies.


They are light blue in color with bright yellow-green mandibles and plant-like intrusions on their back.

Behavior

  • Emits a green pulse every 15 seconds, restoring 20% health and cleansing Status Effects to allied units within 10 meters.
  • They will occasionally deploy grappling hooks to reel in players into melee range, identical to that used by Grineer Scorpions.
    • The grappling hook has a 1 second delay before being reeled back and inflicting  Knockdown. During this time the player can cut the rope with a melee attack, or bullet jump or roll which will cause the Ancient Healer to be dragged along.

Notes

  • The crown on its back is a special body modifier that reduces damage by 50%.
  • The pulse will still heal and disable the  Radiation status effects on nearby enemies from abilities like  Chaos, nullifying the ability entirely.
    • This will occur even if nearby Infested are hostile to the Ancient due to Radiation procs.

Trivia

  • In Update 9.0 (2013-07-13), a new model was implemented for the Ancients, resembling humanoid squids in appearance.
  • In Lore, the Ancients are described as being hundreds of years older than the Corpus, so their deformed shape could also be attributed to years of infestation and mutation.[citation needed]
  • The Ancient Healer has an Orokin crown on its back, similar to the Ancient Infested of Lephantis.
  • Before Update 14.0 (2014-07-18), the Ancient Healer's health class was categorized as Infested Sinew. It was then changed to Fossilized to match with other Ancients.
  • Before Update 31.5 (2022-04-27), the Ancient Healer provided a 90% damage reduction aura and all Status Effects done to allied units under the aura used to have the status effect applied to the Ancient instead. The aura was changed to provide Overguard equal to 9x of the Ancient Healer's health.
    • Update 38.0 (2024-12-13) separated the Ancient Healer's Overguard to the new Ancient Protector enemy. Likewise the Corrupted Ancient formerly behaved as an Ancient Healer, which now behaves like an Ancient Protector and thus has lost its ability to heal.

Update 38.0 (2024-12-13)

INFESTED ANCIENT CHANGES

As we worked on the Techrot faction, many of the enemies drew inspiration from their Infested counterparts. During development, the Techrot variants received some significant design changes that we felt were appropriate to apply to their progenitors as well — namely the Infested Ancients.

NOTE: these changes apply to all Ancient variants in the Origin System.

Ancient Healer

Ancient Healers increased the survivability of surrounding units in a variety of ways — offering Overguard and healing over time — but ultimately their true effectiveness was tied to Overguard. With this redesign, we are separating out their Overguard ability to add to a new unit (details in the Ancient Protector section below), and focusing on the Healer part of their kit.

  • Removed their ability to give Overguard to Allies.
  • Updated Healing Pulse ability to scale better at higher levels.
    • Effect now heals allies within range 20% of their max health per second for 4 seconds.
    • Pulse now also clears status effects from allies within range.
  • Swapped their color profile to a light green to match the expected color profile for healing characters.
  • Ancient Healer’s model has been updated to include plant-like protrusions on their upper back to help visually distinguish them from other Ancients.

NOTE: Ancient Healer Specters operate differently than their enemy counterpart and are not affected by these changes. The 90% Damage Reduction is remaining, but we are changing their name and model to match the Ancient Protector since their functionality is more in-line with that unit.

Ancient Protector

As mentioned above, we have taken the Ancient Healer’s Overguard Ability and moved it to a new unit entirely: the Ancient Protector! Players will encounter this new enemy wherever other Ancients spawn.

  • Ancient Protectors emit a 10-meter aura that provides all allies with its range with Overguard.
  • Their aura-projection and general attacks mirror that of the Ancient Healer.
  • These enemies emit a greyish-blue aura and feature a series of rings protruding from its back to distinguish them from other Ancients.

Enemy Grappling Hook Rework:

Ancients have had their grappling hook mechanic reworked! An age-old enemy mechanic from the early beginnings of Warframe, they’ve been grappling Tenno left and right for years - it’s time to break free! Since its introduction, the grappling hook attack has consistently knocked players down or dragged them around, providing no opening for combative counterplay.

NOW Ancient grappling hooks will tether to you, followed by a slight delay (1 second) before they attempt to slowly pull you in. Tenno who are agile enough can now Melee attack in the direction of the rope to destroy it and stagger the enemy. Additionally, Bullet Jumping or dodging during the pulling animation can cause a stagger to the enemy.

Overguard: Ancient Healers

Currently, Ancient Healers provide a 90% damage reduction to their allies in range and increased resistance to crowd control abilities. Visually, this is only indicated by a pulsing glow on buffed enemies in range. This is often confusing if you don’t already know that the crowd control resistance and damage reduction is being applied from Ancient Healers.

We have changed Ancient Healers to provide allies in range with Overguard that is applied at 9x their overall Health.  This value simply matches the current level of damage reduction and crowd control resistance provided by Ancient Healers, but with Overguard it will now provide a clear visual indicator that the enemies are being boosted by their Ancient ally!

Overguard can be taken out on enemies bolstered by Ancient Healers through a few different ways:

  • Dealing damage to Overguard
  • Killing the Ancient Healer providing Overguard
  • Drawing them out of range from the Ancient Healer
    • Currently, any enemy that receives an Overguard buff from an Ancient Healer is one time only, they cannot receive Overguard again when back in range or from a new enemy Healer.

Unlike Ancient Healer Eximus, non-Eximus Ancient Healers provide Overguard to allies in range but do not have it themselves. Overguard from Ancient Healers will not apply and stack with innate Eximus Overguard. Also, friendly Ancient Healers (such as Specters) will not be providing Overguard on players in this rework, but this functionality may come in a future update!

Hotfix 31.1.3 (2022-02-15)

  • Defeated Infested Ancients’ corpses will now dissolve quicker.

Hotfix 25.1.1 (2019-06-06)

  • Fixed most Auras not reacting to changes in Rift-Status:
    • Banishing an Eximus enemy will remove its Aura from enemies out of the Rift, eg: if you Banish a Venomous Eximus and stay out of the Rift it won't be able to hit you with its Toxin Aura, or if you Banish an Ancient Healer it won't be able to protect its allies left behind.

  • Fixed enemies Banished by Limbo still being able to affect other non-Banished enemies with their auras. For example, Ancient Healer Auras still affected other Infested even if the Ancient Healer was Banished.

  • Adjusted spawns for Void and Infested Defense Missions to prevent too many Corrupted Ancients and Ancient Healers from spawning at once.

  • Adjusted the Ancient Healers healing pulse to be similar to a Small Team Health Restore with decreased frequency and a slightly shorter radius to match the Aura.
  • Fixed all types of Ancient Healers not having the same Aura and healing pulse.
