This article is about the VOCALOID4 software known as a voicebank. If you are looking for the VOCALOID concept then click here.
History
On November 20, 2014, VOCALOID4 was officially announced through a livestream in which several companies appeared announcing their upcoming updated VOCALOIDs. VY1v4 was one of these VOCALOIDs revamped for the new engine.
Its voicebank was used to showcase the new features and capabilities of the VOCALOID4 engine. It was revealed that VY1v4 also contained four voicebanks: Normal, Power, Natural, and Soft.
VOCALOID4 and VY1v4 became available on December 17, 2014, making it the first voice to be released for the engine.[1]
Shortly prior to VY1v4's release, the YouTube demo uploads of iNSaNiTY and COSMONAUTS were set to private due to YAMAHA's request. They were once again made public after VY1v4 was released.
Creator Pack
Yamaha has since released a "Creator Pack" for VY1v4. This is similar to the Creator pack released for Fukase. This product contained a physical product called "UR12", a USB powered audio interface device. The package also included the "VOCALOID4 Editor for Cubase", a copy of the DAW software Cubase AI, and the VY1v4 vocal.

This is an updated version of the VY1v3 vocal; its main purpose is to demonstrate the new features of VOCALOID4. A Job plug-in was supplied by the VOCALOID SHOP to fix a loudness issue the "natural" voice has. Users needed to register to obtain it.[2]

The main purpose of the XSY usage in this package was to make use of the original intent of XSY. Which was to create a smooth transition between vocals. In other words, instead of going straight from "Normal" to "Power" on higher notes, a User can add a "Normal" x "Power" in the result to smooth between the two vocals. So the song will be written with the voicebanks so the song may go; "Normal" -> "Normal" x "Soft" -> "Soft". This can be complicated to achieve and impossible unless there is room to create a XSY buffer result. Can also use the new "XSY" feature between all 4 vocals to create new vocals.

VY1v4 Normal |
Cross-Synthesis as noted: |
Normal is the vocal used to bridge between "Soft" and "Power" and can be used as a starting point in XSY. It is the main vocal of the package and is intended to be XSY'ed with all other vocals in the package. It has the main traits of the VY1 vocal. The various XSY paths that include "Normal" to make VY1 have more expression are;
For the most part, the best way to use XSY in the package is to make a song with "Normal" as the starting vocal then to add expression via use of the additionsals voicebanks.

This is a vocal designed to have a "NATURAL" tone.

VY1v4 Natural |
Cross-Synthesis as noted: |
"Natural"s role in XSY is to act as the buffer between vocals, meaning that it can be used in XSY when switching between "normal" and "power" , "normal" and "soft" or "Soft" and "Power", thus this is the reason it covers all 3 vocal ranges. The XSY result between it and any of the 3 voicebanks is not so dramatic. If used for this method the transistions are normally;
Nautral can be used to skip the use of "Normal" as a middle vocal since it covers the middle vocal range. The main issue with using "Natural" for XSY to swiftly change vocal ranges is that normally this requires room to do so since full effective transistions between voicebanks require room to take full use of "Natural". Since Natural covers all 3 vocal ranges, these is no need in this jump to have a "Natural" step, it either transistions into "Normal" or skips "Normal" entirely. Thus the steps are instead;
"Normal" contains all the traits of VY1 while "Natural" has extra traits on top of those. So the vocal may not be always the best option for a athentic result of the VY1 vocal. This can be a decider on what is best to use of the two examples. If used to create a new vocal tone for VY1, the voicebank acts as a vocal extender since it has the ability to improve range. Since its vocal range is so large, XSY as a main vocal is entirely possible with every voicebank, and depending on which vocal is used depends on how "Natural" is impacted. Voicebanks can remove some of the fluquidness of the "Natural" voice in the process.
