Tar-Goroth

Tar Goroth is a supporting antagonist in the 2017 The Lord of the Rings video game Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

Tar Goroth was a Balrog general in Morgoth's army under Sauron when the first Dark Lord battled the Host of Valinor. He was defeated by the nature spirit named Carnán and fell into the pits of Gorgoroth, at the end of the War of Wrath.

Biography

He is accidentally awakened when Talion and Celebrimbor forge a new Ring of Power. Upon being called back by the Uruk sorcerer named Zog the Eternal, Tar Goroth resurfaces as a servant of Sauron and proceeds to go on a rampage to destroy any creature that stands in his path and torching the forest of Carnán. For this reason, Talion agrees to stop the Balrog, both to make amends and to get the normally neutral nature spirit on his side.

He is destroyed by Carnán, Talion, and Celebrimbor, where it remains frozen in a lake. Zog comes to resurrect him but reveals that he is now planning to corrupt the demon into aiding him in his plan to supplant Sauron as the new Dark Lord. The necromancer fails and is apparently killed by the Ranger from the Black Gate. However, Zog is resurrected by his followers once again, and he attempts to restart his plan until he is stopped by Talion once again.

Trivia

  • He was first shown in the game's cinematic announcement trailer but was not given an official name until the announcement of the limited Mythrill edition, which includes a statue of him fighting Talion riding a drake made out of nature by Carnan.
