Rapu is the overarching antagonist of the 2022 Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero film Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth installment in the Thor film series.

He was the god who was responsible for initiating Gorr's vengeful crusade to kill all gods in the universe due to him refusing to help his daughter.

He was portrayed by Jonny Brugh who also played Deacon Brücke in What we do in the shadows

Biography

He was among many of the deities worshipped by Gorr and his people. He was both arrogant and self-serving and killed a previous wielder of All-Black the Necrosword prior to encountering Gorr himself. Gorr had entered his lush realm and fed upon his celebratory fruits before Rapu demanded to know why he was doing this, as well as demanding how him and his people should be worshipping the gods. Gorr himself explained that he was the only one left, causing Rapu to mock him and demand him find other followers to worship him and his brood. He even told Gorr the food wasn't for the planet, but to celebrate his victory over the wielder of the Necrosword's previous wielder. Rapu became enraged when Gorr tore off his medallion and renounced him, gripping his throat and strangling him slowly. As he was doing this, Rapu didn't notice the Necrosword float into Gorr's hand until he was impaled through the throat by his former disciple.

In his final moments, Rapu told Gorr the sword was a curse, only for him to say otherwise and therefore vowing to kill all the gods before beheading his former deity.

Personality

Rapu was an arrogant and self-serving deity, who demanded the worship of lesser beings, while denying them the things for which they would pray. He was also known to demean those who worshipped him, including Gorr, leading to his last disciple to turn on him and then kill him. For all his bluster, when at Gorr's mercy Rapu is a pitiful coward, dying shamefully at the hands of his former disciple. Rapu's arrogance has made him foolish, as he celebrated his victory over the All-Black the Necrosword's wielder, but did not bother to destroy the sword when he had the chance, which was his undoing. Rapu was also extremely petulant and immature, smugly telling Gorr there was no eternal reward for his people before childishly throwing a piece of fruit at Gorr. Rapu's selfishness, arrogance, laziness, and childish superiority complex led to his brutal death at the blade of Gorr.

Trivia

Rapu is based on the unnamed golden armored god who fought Knull before Gorr took the latter's sword, All-Black.
