The Giant Octopus (大ダコ Dai Dako), known as Octopapa in English, is a minor character in the Dragon Ball manga and anime series. He is a giant talking octopus who attempts to eat Goku when he was finding a Dragon Ball there.
He was voiced by Tessho Genda in Japanese, Justin Cook in the Funimation English dub and Michelle Armeneau in the Blue Water English dub.
Origin and Appearance
Octopapa is a giant octopus with a rather cartoonish appearance, resembling a pink cephalopod with large eyes and thick tentacles. He resides in the Pirate Cave, an underwater labyrinth where the treasures of ancient pirates are hidden. Despite his massive size and initially menacing look, he is more comedic than truly evil.
Biography
Octopapa appears in the original Dragon Ball series during the Red Ribbon Army Saga. Goku, Krillin, and Bulma enter the Pirate Cave in search of a Dragon Ball but must overcome various dangers, including traps and enemies. While exploring the cave, they encounter Octopapa, who instinctively attacks them for intruding into his territory.
Despite his large size and strength, Octopapa is no match for Goku. The young Saiyan, with his agility and power, easily dodges the octopus's attacks and defeats him using his signature Kamehameha. In the anime version, after being hit, Octopapa flees in fear rather than being completely destroyed, leaving open the possibility that he continues to live in the cave.
Personality
Although initially hostile, Octopapa does not seem to be truly evil. He acts more out of instinct and self-defense rather than malice. His reaction is understandable, as Goku and his friends invade his home without permission. He adds a comedic touch to the series, as his aggressive attitude quickly turns into fear when facing Goku's overwhelming strength.
Trivia
- In the Latin American dub, he is called Gran Pulpo ("Great Octopus"), while in Japanese, he is known as Tako-Sennin (タコ仙人), which translates to "Octopus Hermit."
- Although he never reappears in the series, he is referenced in some Dragon Ball video games or mentioned in dialogues.
- His design is a nod to classic pirate myths and sea monster movies.
