Mael

It's impossible to read what he's truly thinking or feeling, just like Meliodas... But what worries me the most is that inexplicable feeling of unease and discomfort that radiates from him... Like something's out of place... I can't figure what the source of it is... But regardless, he is a strange man.
~ Cusack about Estarossa.

Mael is a major antagonist in the manga/anime series The Seven Deadly Sins. He is one of the Four Archangels of the Goddess Clan, serving under the Supreme Deity. During the Holy War 3,000 years ago, Gowther and his "son" reforged Mael and everyone else's memories, giving the Archangel a new identity as a member of the Ten Commandments and the illegitimate son of the Demon King, under the name of Estarossa.

He is voiced by Hiroki Tōchi in Japanese and David Vincent in English, who also voices Gilgamesh in Fate/Stay Night, Jin Kisaragi in BlazBlue, and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez in Bleach).

Appearance

As Estarossa, he is a tall, muscular man with black eyes and short silver hair resembling that of Meliodas. His demon mark is on the left side of his forehead, and is identical to Zeldris' in both shape and size. He wears a long yellow coat (blue in the anime) with silver boots and gauntlets. After absorbing the Truth Commandment, his demon mark enlarges and darkness covers his arms, legs and back. After absorbing the Reticence Commandment, he gains a form very similar to Meliodas' Assault Mode.

As Mael, he has blue eyes and his hair is much longer, similar to his older brother Ludociel. He has four wings on his back, two large above and two small underneath. He wears a white, buttoned robe with striped pants and sandals. After absorbing the Purity Commandment, he undergoes a complete transformation, now with six wings (three black and three white, symbolising his unstable nature as both a goddess and a demon). He wears a long, white full-body dress with sparks of black on it. He also wears a horned helmet with a veil hanging from it. The veil is etched with the symbols of each of his four Commandments - everytime he uses one of them, the symbol disappears.

Personality

Mael has always been kind in nature and mostly pacifistic. Despite this, he still brutally killed many demons, believing he was "freeing them." This ideology was likely implanted by his brother, Ludociel, whom Mael deeply admired.

As Estarossa, he was believed to be a kind but cowardly boy who wanted to end the war between race. He had low confidence in himself and always admired his "older brother", Meliodas. Estarossa hated his inability to use darkness, not because he wanted power, but because it would embarrass Meliodas's reputation as his brother. His admiration for Meliodas did border on obsessively jealous as Estarossa started to "want to become Meliodas." He even wanted to steal his lover, Elizabeth, in order to become even more like him.

On the surface, Estarossa is calm, aloof and rarely shows emotion, even when threatened. When with the other Commandments, he rarely displays any form of interaction towards them (with the exception of Zeldris.) The other Commandments are implied to dislike him. In return, he does not care for any of them, as shown by how he was willing to kill Melascula for stealing his fun.

Like many demons, Estarossa is very cruel and doesn't have any concern for other lives. In his debut, he demonifies and explodes a bird for absolutely no reason. He cruelly tortures Meliodas before killing him , though crying while doing so, showing he still loves his brother. He is confident in his abilities, believing he can even take on two Archangels at once. He enjoys fighting strong opponents and tends to overestimate himself. He even wanted to fight his brothers for the throne of the Demon King, despite having no interest in it.

Due to his Love Commandment, he is not able to feel hatred towards his opponents, otherwise it takes away his power. In return, he does his best to make others hate him, so they are powerless before him. He mainly does this by killing people's loved ones and continually mocking them.

Estarossa is later shown to be a very twisted individual, even by demons standards. He is fully willing to go against his brother Zeldris' orders (obtaining the Commandments) and stealing them for himself. He will slaughter his fellow commandments in order to obtain more Commandments, despite not actually needing to kill them. He kills Galand simply to save time and Monspeet because he wanted too.

After absorbing Galand's commandment, he becomes mentally unstable. His facial features and mannerisms become different, starting with him constantly laughing, speaking in a high voice and having his tongue out. He even sadistically laughs while Archangels repeatedly brutalize him.

After absorbing Monspeet's commandment as well, he starts to think he is Meliodas and becomes increasingly violent, randomly unleashing darkness on innocent people. Once remembering he is Estarossa, he starts crying in a toddler-like manner about his brother being at fault for his actions. He also starts to become aggressive towards Elizabeth, wanting her to accept his love. Due to his immense power, he is able to ignore the other people attacking him and only concerns about talking to Elizabeth. He becomes immensely jealous and is willing to eat Elizabeth since she loves his brother instead of him.

After regaining his memories, Mael becomes mentally unstable. He is horrified by the crimes he has committed, but also wishes vengeance upon the one who manipulated him and changed his memories.
