Leliel is a major antagonist that appears in episode 16 of the anime television series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Designated as the Twelfth Angel, Leliel is a character exclusive to the original television series, never appearing in any chapter of manga adaptation by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto or installment of reboot film series known as Rebuild of Evangelion.

An incongruous shadow-like entity and one of the members of a powerful supernatural race of giant monsters known as the Angels, Leliel is notorious for its ability to teleport anything into its personal dimension through physical contact with its body on the ground. Its shadow appears as a floating giant sphere, which is commonly mistaken for the Angel's real body.

Biography

Leliel appeared in Tokyo-III fifteen years after being created by Adam in 13 September 2000, just like the rest of the Angels in the series. Its unusual appearance and behavior made NERV send all three Evangelion Units to deduce its special powers before terminating it. Unfortunately, Evangelion Unit-01 was absorbed into the creature when it tried to attack a giant floating sphere in the air, which was actually the Angel's shadow. As soon as it got close to it, the shadow disappeared and Leliel's real body appeared underneath Unit-01's feet, which absorbed the attacker in no time. Unit-00 then tried to attack the creature's shadow, only for it to disappear again and for its real body to reappear beneath Unit-02's feet. Fortunately, Unit-02 managed to jump out of its way seconds before Leliel had a chance to make the contact with its body. The Angel absorbed an entire street, dragging the buildings and vehicles down to its dimension. Misato then ordered them to retreat from the battle field.

Scientist Ritsuko Akagi realized that the eldritch horror's real body resides on the ground, while the floating sphere is its shadow. NERV prepared JSSDF's forces to obliterate the Angel's dimension using 992 N² Bombs, but Misato cancelled the order when she realized that the plan was going to kill Shinji. Meanwhile, Shinji was trapped inside the Angel's dimension, realizing that Unit-01's life-supporting systems will keep him alive for the next 5-6 hours. Leliel decided to attempt a communication between it and Shinji, creating a projection of a train station inside his mind and assuming his 3-year old form. Angel explained to him there are multiple interpretations of him inside other people's mind, and that Shinji is afraid of every one of them. The creature also discussed Shinji's opinions about others, telling him that he cannot lie to himself or shut himself out of the world. Just as Shinji started falling asleep hours later, his mother's consciousness made contact with him.

Minutes before JSSDF's plan was going to be initiated, Leliel's real body started cracking and shaking. Ritsuko immediately shrugged off a question from Misato that Shinji was doing it, only for Unit-01's arm to rip its way out of Leliel's shadow. Seconds later, the shadow exploded into a mass of entrails and blood, and Unit-01 destroyed Leliel's real body by falling into the ground.

Personality

Leliel is one of the more passive Angels, never engaging in a fight and simply heading towards Terminal Dogma. It is possible that the angel is unable to see in this universe and locates its attackers by the trajectory of their attacks. The Angel seems to understand the laws of this universe, using its own shadow as bait to make its attackers think it is actually its real body. When conversing with Shinji Ikari, Leliel seemed curious about the nature of the human's mind, but at the same time acted emotionless, speaking bluntly and displaying wisdom about people's interpretations of Shinji. However, as Shinji started screaming about leaving him alone, Leliel listened to his command and abandoned all attempts to communicate with the human, letting him perish instead.

Physical Appearance

Leliel is a flat, black, rounded creature without any limbs, head, torso or tail. It measures approximately 2230 feet (or 680 metres) in diameter and 3 nanometers in thickness. It remains unclear how it moves around without any limbs, but it is possible that it levitates through its AT Field. Its shadow is a massive floating sphere of black-white color scheme with stripes serving as a set of bulging eyes and sharp jaws.

Powers and Abilities

  • Shadow Angel Physiology: Unique to its kind, Leliel is an eldritch entity which operates on a different type of laws of physics, such as inverted shadow, limbless anatomy or personal reality. Because of this, its physiology is very different from other Angels, having no exposed S2 Engine which eliminates obvious weakness while its AT Field is used to support its extra-thin body instead of simply serving as force field.
    • Dimensional Imprisonment: Leliel's body is essentially a living portal to another dimension, which can open as wide as 680 metres and absorb several skyscrapers at once. Said dimension is endless void with no escape, leaving anything trapped in it to starve to death. Only beings of extreme power, such as Berserk Evangelion Unit-01, can rip their way through the Angel's body, allowing them to escape from the void.
    • Incorporeal Manifestation: Aside from its shadow, Leliel is completely incorporeal creature which cannot be touched by third-dimensional beings. Attacking its real body from outside is just as futile as attacking its shadow, as attacks simply pass through into endless void. It's demonstrated by Evangelion Unit-01, which tried to shoot the creature's body with handgun with no effect.
    • Instantaneous Teleportation: Leliel is capable of instantaneously disappearing from its opponents' sight and reappearing right under their feet to pull them into its dimension. It was demonstrated several times that shooting Leliel's shadow only causes it to disappear and reappear moment later.
    • Psychic Communication: Leliel can channel its thoughts into people's minds inside of its void, as well as project itself as their past versions to speak what appears to be human language.
    • Self-Sustenance: Being an Angel, Leliel possesses no need to consume food, drink water or breathe air.
