Ireul, also known as Iruel, is a major antagonist in 1996 anime TV show Neon Genesis Evangelion, serving as the main antagonist of the episode 13 titled Angel Invasion.
Eleventh Angel to appear in the series, Ireul is a malevolent colony of microscopic organisms which share a single soul, whose goal is to infect NERV HQ and turn its technology against its masters, namely to use MAGI supercomputers to detonate an entire base through self-destruction protocol. Despite nearly succeeding, the Angel was ultimately tricked into self-extinction by Ritsuko Akagi, who managed to remove its influence from MAGI supercomputers and destroy the creature.
Trivia
- Ireul bears resemblance to an extraterrestrial microorganism from 1969 novel The Andromeda Strain written by Michael Crichton.
- Ireul is one of the eight Angels who appeared in the original anime series, but did not make it to Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy. Others are Gaghiel, Israfel, Sandalphon, Matarael, Leliel, Arael and Armisael.
- Ironically, despite killing an Angel that wanted to hack NERV into self-destruction in episode 13, Ritsuko Akagi herself would later attempt to activate NERV's self-detonation through MAGI supercomputers during The End of Evangelion. However, she failed due to her mother's consciousness choosing Gendo over her.
