Hyacinth, also known as the Sage King, is a major antagonist in the 2023 tactical role-playing video game Fire Emblem Engage, being the main antagonist during the first half of the game's story.
He is the wise and ambitious ruler of Elusia, a country which worships the Fell Dragon, Sombron. He seems to be following the Fell Dragon out of fanaticism and lust for power, but Sombron actually brainwashed him into becoming evil and he is a genuinely decent person at heart. He is the arch-enemy of King Morion, Diamant, and Alcryst.
He was voiced by Takashi Nagasako (who also voiced Dheginsea in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Ganondorf in the Legend of Zelda series) in Japanese and Brook Chalmers (who also voices Ashnard from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance in Fire Emblem Heroes) in English.
Biography
Hyacinth is the king of the Kingdom of Elusia, which has been at war with the Kingdom of Brodia for years. Morion, Brodia's ruler, was wary of Elusia due to the country's loyalty to the Fell Dragon who once tried to take over their world.
Hyacinth had a wife and several concubines, fathering his daughters Ivy and Hortensia from these women. While the Sage King's wife (Ivy's mother) was evil, the king himself and Hortensia's mother were good parents who loved both girls dearly. In spite of this, Sombron revived himself and turned the benevolent monarch into a cold and cowardly man thanks to his powers.
Before the start of Fire Emblem Engage's events, Hyacinth sent his forces to steal the Emblem Rings kept in Lythos (the home of the game's overarching protagonist Lumera), since Sombron needed them to open a portal to the multiverse and fulfill his plan. During the story proper, he orders his daughters and minions to attack the neighboring countries of Firene and Brodia in order to steal their rings. However, his generals were defeated in Firene by Alear, while his daughters were stopped by both Alear and the princes of Brodia. Hyacinth decides then to step on the battlefield personally, challenging Morion in a fight. After Morion beats him, Hyacinth orders his Emblem to shoot at him point blank, successfully injuring the king into a weakened state. With the king of Brodia unable to fight back, Hyacinth has the monarch captured, hoping to sacrifice him in order to restore Sombron to his peak of power. Hyacinth then leaves the battlefield while ordering Ivy to fight against Alear, hoping to sacrifice her for his goals.
Sombron eats Morion to regain his strength and turns the latter into a corrupted. Hyacinth, Hortensia and a corrupted Morion then fight against Alear's army, with the heroes proving victorious. Once defeated, Hyacinth is apparently saved from Diamant's wrath by the Fell Princess, Sombron's daughter, only for the evil god to eat him and turn him into a second sacrifice. In the following battle, Ivy joins Alear's party and helps them escape from the Fell Princess, who takes over the late Hyacinth's army. Meanwhile, Ivy steal from her two rings and the draconic time crystal, knowing that they will give them strength in the incoming clash
In Chapter 17, the Fell Princess reveals that she revived Hyacinth as payback for Ivy stealing the rings and the crystal. The revived ruler duels against the heroes once more, only to be defeated for the third and final time. His brainwashing wearing off, Hyacinth admits to his daughters that the path he walked was his fate, requesting that his beloved daughters save Elusia for him before succumbing to his wounds.
Personality
King Hyacinth is a polite and kind man who loves his country, his family, and the honor he holds as king. That said, he was far from perfect even before being possessed, since he was unable to prevent his wife from turning the Elusian royal court into a decadent court out of jealousy towards her husband's concubines. Ultimately, Hyacinth is a thoughtful and brave man who faces death with dignity when he is defeated as a corrupted.
While he is under Sombron's control, Hyacinth is a selfish, cowardly, self-absorbed, ambitious and fanatical monarch, who lets his zealotry devotion to the Fell Dragon cloud his judgment. He also becomes a neglectful monarch and father while in this state, seeing his people and family members as little more than tools. However, his personality is a dark reflection of Sombron's own behavior, and is a far cry from the kind of person the king really is.
