Grunther is a major antagonist of the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
He was portrayed by the late Russian stuntman Yuri Borienko.
Role
Grunther is a criminal working for Ernst Stavro Blofeld and head of Piz Gloria's security. He, along with Irma Bunt, Blofeld's righthand woman and henchman, wait for Sir Hilary Bray, who is actually James Bond in disguise. He denies Bond's ally, Shaun Campbell, access into the allergy clinic and then kills Campbell after he tries to scale the mountain face of Piz Gloria.
When Bond is discovered by Blofeld, Grunther knocks him out and restrains and escorts Bond to his new room. When Bond escapes, Grunther alerts Blofeld of his escape. He is killed by Tracy Draco, Bond's love interest and eventual wife, when she impales him on a set of ornamental wall spikes hung on the wall at Piz Gloria.
Trivia
During the auditions for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, George Lazenby was required to 'fight' Borienko as part of the screen test. Lazenby ended up breaking Borienko's nose, winning Lazenby the part of Bond and Borienko was given the part of Grunther as compensation.
