Without warning, our doom fell from the sky. From whence it came we do not know. The horror shrieked its name: GOREA. Gorea is power beyond reckoning and evil unrelenting. The universe has not known terror such as this. At first we thought Gorea was a comet. It crashed upon our planet and emerged as a vapour, it mimicked our cellular structure and replicated itself in solid form. We have seen Gorea alter its atomic structure between polarizing states. Our scientists believe it may also possess other SHAPE-CHANGING abilities. We deployed our deadliest weapons to defeat the beast. To our horror, every weapon was somehow used against us. The war only lasted a few standard galactic months. Even with the galaxy's most powerful technology at our disposal, we fell like dry grass beneath the blade. For Gorea was immune to even our most sophisticated weaponry, while we were defenseless against its relentless attacks. It devoured our people's life energy and grew even more powerful from such sustenance. Death swept across our worlds, and we despaired. We feared not only for the extinction of our race and our galaxy, but the possibility that the evil would sweep across the entire universe, annihilating all in its path. We gave our lives to confine the foul monstrosity known as Gorea. Do not seek this creature unless you have the means to DESTROY it.
~ Alimbic lore describing Gorea.

Gorea is the main antagonist of the 2006 action-adventure game Metroid Prime Hunters.

It is an eldritch being that fought and eventually wiped out the Alimbic people, yet was sealed in another dimension by them in the process. In the present day, Gorea sends out a distress signal to lure Samus Aran and several other bounty hunters to the Almbic Cluster, where it proceeds to manipulate their rivalries in a plot to set itself free.

Description

Appearance

Gorea is a massive, monstrous creature with a vaguely humanoid silhouette. Its body is a swirling vortex of dark energy, constantly shifting and pulsating. It has no discernible facial features, but its form is vaguely insectoid, with multiple limbs and appendages that writhe and lash out at its enemies.

Personality

It is a being of pure malevolent energy, driven by an insatiable hunger for destruction. It is utterly ruthless and without mercy, caring only for the gratification of its own dark desires. It views all other beings as nothing more than prey, to be devoured or consumed at its whim. It also extremely sadistic and cruel, as it enjoys inflicting pain and suffering on others, and takes pleasure in their fear and despair. It is also highly manipulative, intelligent and cunning, able to use its dark powers to deceive and trick its opponents to do its bidding. Its motivations are unclear, but it is believed to be driven by a desire to spread chaos and destruction throughout the galaxy. It may also be seeking to consume the power of other beings, in order to increase its own strength and influence.

Biography

Backstory

Flwe3

Gorea, an immensely powerful and malevolent entity, made its presence known in the Alimbic Cluster countless centuries in the past. Its arrival on Alinos was marked by a cataclysmic crash, resembling nothing less than a comet hurtling towards its destination. Emerging from the impact as a formless gas, Gorea's biologically adaptable nature allowed it to swiftly adopt the guise of a nightmarish, three-legged Alimbic creature. From there, it embarked on a relentless campaign of annihilation, systematically eradicating the once-thriving Alimbic race across every planet they called home. As it ravaged the realms, chaos and despair spread like wildfire throughout the vast expanse of the Tetra Galaxy.

In a final, desperate endeavor to control the unstoppable force known as Gorea, the Alimbic Order resorted to employing a powerful device known as the Seal Sphere. In order to ensure maximum containment, they carefully placed the Seal Sphere within the confines of the prison ship named "Oubliette." To further guarantee the removal of any potential threat, they utilized the immense capabilities of the Alimbic Cannon to propel the ship into an entirely different dimension known as the Infinity Void. An integral aspect of the Seal Sphere's operation involved harnessing the profound psionic energy possessed by the Alimbics, resulting in the unfortunate consequence of their race's extinction in the physical realm.

Quarantine

Many years passed before Gorea, an ancient being, decided to send a telepathic message. This message was intended to attract Bounty Hunters from all corners of the universe with the promise of obtaining "Ultimate Power" within the Alimbic Cluster. Gorea's aim was to break free from its captivity, and this plan almost succeeded. However, unknown to Gorea, there was a powerful weapon called the Omega Cannon located in the Oubliette facility. This weapon was eventually utilized by Samus Aran to defeat Gorea's ultimate form and put an end to its reign of terror.

There is limited information available in Alimbic Lore regarding the origins of Gorea, as the Alimbics themselves were oblivious to its source. The impact of Gorea on Alinos bears a resemblance to the destructive force exerted by the Leviathans on different planets in the Prime series. In addition, Gorea possesses the ability to assimilate weapons from its adversaries, similar to how Metroid Prime did before its lore was altered. Furthermore, Gorea possesses a second form that is airborne and can only be defeated with a specific, specially-designed weapon.

Samus' Arrival

After the other Bounty Hunters had arrived in the Oubliette, Samus Aran made her way to the eerie prison in no time. She ventured through the unsettling corridors until she finally arrived at Gorea's chamber. Inside, she witnessed the other Hunters fiercely shooting at a magnificent orb situated at the center of the room. Suddenly, the orb shattered into pieces, setting Gorea free from its confines. To Samus's astonishment, the creature unleashed six tendrils from its waist, which swiftly attached themselves to the Hunters, sapping away their unique abilities. As a result, Gorea now possessed Kanden's Volt Driver, Weavel's Battlehammer, Noxus's Judicator, Spire's Magmaul, Trace's Imperialist, and Sylux's Shock Coil.

Final Battle

After transforming its arms into cannons, Gorea challenged Samus, who was watching, in its monstrous Alimbic form in the lower levels of the Oubliette. It alternated between the six stolen weapons from the Hunters, each with enhanced abilities. For example, the Battlehammer could be charged to shoot multiple shots at a faster rate than normal, despite its incompatibility with the Charge Beam. The Shock Coil could emit short bursts at an unusually long range. Due to its dual arm cannons, Gorea could fire two shots of each weapon simultaneously. It would also attack Samus with its arms if she got too close and try to stomp her while she was in her Morph Ball form. However, its shoulders were vulnerable to the opposite weapon it was using. If one shoulder sustained enough damage, Gorea would lose that arm but regenerate it in a few moments. If Samus managed to destroy both arms quickly, Gorea would attempt to regenerate by floating in the air and drawing energy from the Seal Sphere. During this time, Samus could attack the Seal Sphere and harm Gorea with the same weapon she used to destroy its arms. However, Gorea would retaliate by grabbing Samus with its tendril and throwing her around the room. It would also use its tendrils to grab the Trocras in the room and hurl them as projectiles. Interestingly, the tendrils used to grab Samus and the Trocras emerged from the Seal Sphere rather than its waist as previously observed.

Once Gorea had sustained a sufficient amount of damage, it seemed as though it had been completely annihilated. In reality, it turned out that Gorea possessed a hidden second form. To uncover and confront this form, Samus had to successfully hit the six Colored Panels mounted on the prison walls using the weapons that corresponded to each panel's color. The correct order for firing these weapons was revealed through the "Alimbic Prophecy" lore scans. Once Gorea was ultimately defeated, the panels activated a teleportation mechanism that transported both Samus and the defeated creature to a brand new battleground.

Gorea's second form bears a striking resemblance to its initial form, with one notable difference - it is devoid of any limbs. Instead, it is bound to the Seal Sphere, which now serves as its main source of power. This transformed version of Gorea hovers effortlessly in the air, possessing the uncanny ability to teleport at will. The Seal Sphere itself, once brimming with the potent essence of the Alimbic civilization, now lies empty and defenseless, as Gorea desperately tries to siphon energy from it. Although the Seal Sphere remains Gorea's Achilles heel, it has become impervious to any and all weapons wielded by the formidable Samus. Interestingly, Gorea's lower flap-like appendage showcases six vibrant orange spots, acting as a visual representation of its health status, despite already possessing an official health bar. As the battle rages on and Samus unleashes a barrage of attacks, these orange spots gradually darken, symbolizing the extent of the damage inflicted upon Gorea. Just as the conflict intensifies, Samus suddenly receives a vital communication from her trusty Hunter Gunship, which provides her with critical guidance towards the Omega Cannon, a powerful weapon concealed at the very depths of the battle arena. This incredible cannon possesses the unique capability to harm the Seal Sphere, ultimately granting Samus the means to triumph over Gorea and emerge victorious.

Power and Abilities

Gorea possesses several powers that share similarities with those of Metroid Prime. For instance, like Metroid Prime, Gorea has the ability to absorb and assimilate the weapons of its adversaries using its tentacles. This was notably demonstrated when it absorbed the powers of all six hunters it encountered. Additionally, according to the Alimbic Lore, Gorea possesses the capability to drain the life energy from its victims, leaving behind lifeless bodies, a power reminiscent of the abilities of the Metroids. Furthermore, Gorea exhibits some form of telepathy, as it was able to entice the hunters to the Alimbic Cluster. Furthermore, it possesses the skills of teleportation and levitation.

Power:

  • Immense Strength: Gorea possesses incredible strength, capable of shattering the hull of Samus's Gunship with a single swipe of its clawed arm.
  • Energy manipulation: Gorea can unleash powerful energy blasts and shockwaves that can severely damage opponents.
  • Levitation and flight: Gorea can levitate and fly freely, maneuvering through the battlefield with ease.
  • Shapeshifting: Gorea can transform into a smaller, more agile form to evade attacks and attack from unexpected angles.
  • Corruption: Gorea can corrupt other beings with its dark energy, turning them into mindless servants.

Abilities:

  • Enhanced Reflexes and Agility: Despite its size, Gorea boasts quick reflexes and can dodge attacks with impressive agility.
  • Resistance to Damage: Gorea's tough hide and energy shielding make it resistant to conventional weaponry.
  • Strategic Intelligence: Despite its bestial appearance, Gorea possesses cunning intelligence, setting traps and manipulating events to its advantage.

Weakness:

  • Metroid Energy: Gorea is particularly vulnerable to the energy absorbed from Metroids, which can significantly weaken its regenerative abilities and overall power.
  • Arrogance: Gorea's overconfidence and underestimation of its opponents can be its downfall, leaving it open to strategic attacks.
  • Energy Core: While its armored exterior is formidable, Gorea's core is its weak point. Damaging the core enough can critically cripple or even destroy it.
  • Corruption Vulnerability: The Phazon corruption powering Gorea can be overloaded, causing it to become unstable and vulnerable to attack.

Trivia

  • Gorea is the only major villain in the franchise to have no connection to the Space Pirates, the Metroids, or Phaaze, making it an outlier as a truly independent antagonist.
  • According to Richard Vorodi, Gorea can be best described as a terrifying entity from the cosmos, evoking an ancient and otherworldly essence similar to the beings known as the "old ones." The origins of Gorea, however, remain shrouded in enigma, deliberately designed to elude any attempts at unraveling its true nature and purpose.
  • The Gorea 01 entry in the Alimbic Lore reveals an interesting aspect of the creature's abilities. It suggests that Gorea possesses not only telepathic communication skills but also the ability to vocalize its thoughts. However, it is also possible that the Alimbics named the creature based on the sound it makes rather than Gorea actually introducing itself verbally. Regardless, it is worth noting that none of the noises emitted by Gorea during Samus's confrontation with it remotely resemble the name "Gorea".
  • It is worth mentioning that Gorea appeared on Alinos in a distinct form that differed from the version Samus encounters in the Oubliette. The unique sound emitted by Gorea during its initial invasion of Alimbic territory might have been specific to its original form.
  • It is also plausible that the term "gorea" held some onomatopoetic significance to the Alimbics, regardless of whether it was actually uttered by them or not. This bears resemblance to the way onomatopoeic words differ across various languages on Earth, resulting in certain instances of such words within a particular dialect sounding absurd to individuals who are not native speakers of said dialect.
  • The Crash Site on Alinos is a place of great significance, as it marks the exact location where Gorea made its dramatic arrival as a comet. Upon closer inspection of this area, one would notice the severe architectural damage that has occurred as a result of this extraterrestrial collision. Interestingly, there is evidence of unidentifiable interstellar matter scattered around, further emphasizing the magnitude of this event. However, it is worth considering that this might also be the crash site of Sylux's Delano 7, as it has been observed flying over the area earlier, leaving behind a distinct smoke trail. These intriguing details only add to the mystique and allure of the Crash Site on Alinos, beckoning adventurers to explore its secrets and uncover the truth behind this enigmatic phenomenon.
  • The number of enemy kills in the Records section of the Main Menu does not change before or after the Gorea battle.
  • According to the Alimbic Pride 04 lore, individuals who survived "the cancer" were left in a condition where it appeared as though their essence had been completely drained, and intriguingly, this affliction seemed to intensify with every person it affected. Strikingly, this phenomenon bears a resemblance to the behavior of a Metroid organism.
  • In its initial form, Gorea's shoulders bear a striking resemblance to the shoulders of Samus's Varia Suit. This similarity becomes evident when Gorea absorbs the powers of the six bounty hunters.
  • A significant amount of information collected regarding Gorea bears striking resemblance to certain characteristics of Phazon and its means of distribution, such as the impact of a cosmic body resembling a meteor on a planet. However, establishing a direct connection between this mutagenic substance and Gorea seems improbable, as the entirety of the Metroid Prime series focuses on Phazon and the planets affected by the Leviathans, neither of which are present in Metroid Prime Hunters.
  • The theme you hear when fighting Golea's first form is titled Golea in the BGMSELECTLIST.DAT file. The music that plays during the battle with the second form is "Gorea Returns", a remix of "Metroid Prime Battle".
  • In the Metroid Prime series, there are two final bosses, Gorea and Samus, featured in Metroid Prime: Federation Force, who differ from the other final bosses as they are not directly connected to the Metroid Prime creature.
  • The strategy of utilizing various weapons at different intervals to target Gorea's arms bears resemblance to the approach employed during the encounter with Metroid Prime.
  • The shoulder region of Gorea's arms bears a striking resemblance to orbs, thus establishing yet another parallel with Mogenar, a boss character featured in the Prime series of the popular video game Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
  • If Samus positions herself in the outer ring of the arena when Gorea transforms into its initial Seal Sphere form, it will refrain from launching an attack against her.
  • Gorea stands out as the fourth antagonist in a line of mimics of previous opponents, with SA-X, Dark Samus, and Gandrayda being the first three. Interestingly, while all the others imitated Samus in some way, Gorea took a different approach and chose not to mimic her.
  • The battle against Gorea in Metroid Prime bears striking similarities to the battle against the Metroid Prime itself. In both instances, there are two distinct phases, each mirroring the phases of the other battle. Just as the exoskeleton phase of Metroid Prime is impervious to all weapon types except the one it is currently using, Gorea's first phase exhibits the same vulnerability pattern. In the case of Metroid Prime, the exoskeleton's vulnerability is determined by its color, with yellow susceptible to the Power Beam, purple to the Wave Beam, white to the Ice Beam, and red to the Plasma Beam. Similarly, Gorea's first phase vulnerability is contingent on its coloration, with green being susceptible to the Battlehammer, yellow to the Volt Driver, orange to the Magmaul, blue to the Shock Coil, purple to the Judicator, and red to the Imperialist. Moving on to the second phase, just as Metroid Prime's essence phase is resistant to all weapons except for the Phazon Beam, Gorea's second phase also possesses a specific vulnerability. In this case, the Omega Cannon is the sole weapon capable of inflicting damage. Thus, the parallelism between these battles highlights the intricate design and strategic gameplay employed in both encounters.
