Dr. Crane is a minor antagonist in the Batman comic book series. He is the abusive father of Jonathan Crane, better known as the Scarecrow. In the "New 52 / Prime Earth" continuity of DC Comics, he is the cause of Jonathan's obsession with fear, and despite being long dead, he occasionally reappears in both hallucinations and flashbacks when Jonathan suffers mental breakdowns.

Biography

Dr. Crane's past is mostly unknown outside the fact he apparently was some sort of scientist that was obsessed with weaponizing fear for the government. At some point he had a wife, who gave birth to a son called Jonathan, but under unknown circumstances, his wife died which gave him more freedom to continue his experiments with him primarily doing so to his young son. Even when Jonathan was a mere child, Gerald would regularly attach small devices to monitor his heart rate and push him into a dark cellar full of disturbing puppet and mannequins, often leaving his son there for hours on end. Whenever he would let his son out he would keep him locked in his room to leave him to panic before then trying to convince to continue to assist in his experiments. Should he be questioned he would scold his son and claim given he was meant to carry on his legacy whether he liked it or not.

One day as he was watching the vitals of his son to see the progress of his experiment he suffered a heart attack leaving his son alone for days trapped until authorities came to check on him thus exposing his crimes but far too late. Despite the fact he was dead his twisted legacy continued through his traumatized son, who would later try to replicate the experiment to make his late father proud. Many years later Scarecrow would suffer hallucination of him Halloween when Batman set up a trap, in this hallucination he would berate his son and call him a disgrace before then appearing to attack him before it eventually wearing off.

Appearance

Dr. Crane was a man of above average height, overtly thin build with seemingly thinning brown hair and thick glasses. Given we only see vague appearances not much else is known outside it seeming he was in rather bad health given to regularly cough and ultimately died of a hear attack despite being middle aged, this might be due to seeming to smoke a pipe often and lack of physical activity.

Personality

Dr. Crane is a petty and sadistic scientist that would regularly abuse his child both mentally and physically hinted out of a mix of both curiosity on how much his son could take and sadism. He is shown to regularly to give false reassurance to his son before then forcing said son to take part in said experiments with no care for his son's well beings with the only thing he wants being able to get enough data to gain government funding. As is Dr. Crane is portrayed as nothing more than a greedy and sadistic psychopath with no concern for anyone other than himself.

His first name in this continuity isn't outright stated but based off both the previous continuity and his later Gotham counterpart it is presumably Gerald.
This version is by far the worst version of the character as in "Post-Crisis / New Earth" he was merely a absent father who had no part in his son's life and the Gotham version at least thought he was helping his son and showed some concern, this version however was only motivated by greed and his own sadistic pleasure.
