Gambol

I'm putting the word out. 500 grand for this clown dead. A million alive, so I can teach him some manners first.
~ Gambol's most famous quote.

Gambol is a supporting antagonist in the superhero crime film The Dark Knight, the second installment of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy.

A notorious gang lord, he is one of the biggest crime bosses in Gotham City who opposes The Joker upon his arrival and ends up getting killed by the latter as a result.

He was portrayed by Michael Jai White, who also played Lewis Strutt in Exit Wounds, Bronze Tiger in Arrow, and S.E.T.H. in Universal Soldier: The Return.

History

Background

Gambol was one of the most powerful mob bosses in Gotham City. Before the events of the movie, he was engaged in a turf war with the city's biggest gangland boss Sal Maroni - the new leader of the Gotham Mob following the incarnation of his predecessor Carmine Falcone. However, due to the threat presented by both Batman and newly-elected District Attorney Harvey Dent respectively, Gambol allied himself with Maroni to increase the strength of his organization.

The Dark Knight

Later on, Gambol meets up with both Maroni and fellow crime lord The Chechen to discuss on keeping their money safe with the help from their corrupt accountant Lau after one of their banks is raided by a masked criminal. Suddenly the Joker walks in on their meeting. Gambol, deducing that the Joker is the criminal who robbed the Mob's bank, takes an immediate dislike to the Clown Prince of Crime and threatens to have him killed. The Joker retaliates by killing Gambol's unnamed right-hand man, slamming a pencil in the latter's eye, and then taunting him.

Eventually, Gambol becomes enraged and puts a bounty on the Joker's head: A million dollars for capturing him alive, $500,000 for capturing him dead. Later in the movie, a gang of bounty hunters arrive at Gambol's hideout claiming that they have killed the Joker. After bringing in a body bag with the Joker's body, Gambol prepares to pay the bounty hunters, but the Joker suddenly jumps to his feet very much alive since the bounty hunters are working for him. Whilst the bounty hunters take Gambol's thugs hostage, the Joker takes Gambol hostage with a knife before revealing one of his origins and ending it by slashing Gambol across the mouth. Doing so also slashes Gambol's jugular vein so he quickly bleeds to death.

So, dead? That's 500.

Trivia

  • The name "Gambol" means "To frolic or dance about". As Gambol would likely never accept this as a nickname or alias, Gambol was likely his last name. It also could have been derived from the word "gamble".
  • Michael Jai White is best known for playing superhero Spawn and both Spawn and Gambol have a mutual hatred for clowns (the Joker and Clown/Violator).
  • Gambol's death scene has been the subject of debate among some viewers, as some claim that Gambol is later seen getting arrested despite that the Joker seemingly kills him. According to Michael Jai White, this is because Gambol was originally intended to survive his encounter with the Joker but this was changed during editing.
  • Despite being a arrogant thug, Gambol seems to have loved his grandmother, or at least saw her in high regard, as he’s genuinely offended when Joker brings her up in a mocking way,
