Bara Gusuka is the Sloth-themed Machine Beast of the Machine Empire Baranoia serving Acha and Kocha and the main antagonist of the 30th episode of Chouriki Sentai Ohranger
He is voiced by the late Kazue Takahashi.
Biography
Past
As with all members of the Machine Empire Baranoia, Bara Gusuka was originally built by Emperor Bacchus Wrath and Empress Hysteria some 65 million years ago on Planet Baranoia. Uniquely, Bara Gusuka was built in such a way that his motor would whir in such a way as to send anyone who heard it into a deep hypnotic sleep. Along with the rest of the Machine Beasts and the Barlo Soldiers, Bara Gusuka helped them to devastate and conquer multiple planets.
Ohranger
Millions of years later, in 1999, Bacchus Wrath and his Empire return to Earth and launch an invasion of Earth but the Ohrangers arise to oppose them.
After Acha and Kocha find the Baranoian Royal Family fast asleep and wakes them back up, the mere idea of it annoys Bacchus Wrath and Prince Buldont blames it on the nearby Bara Gusuka. Bacchus Wrath is so angered by the two and a half minute delay that he orders Acha to scrap Bara Gusuka but Hysteria talks him down and convinces the Emperor to send Bara Gusuka to Earth. If his hypnosis sent them to sleep, it can do the same to humans which makes them weaker and easier to conquer. Sent to Earth with a Barlo Soldier in a Takonpas, Bara Gusuka almost sends it and the intercepting Ohrangers to sleep but it is then shot down by the Choriki Cannon. Undamaged, Bara Gusuka emerges and the Ohrangers confront him so Acha and Kocha deploy Cogs before the Ohrangers are bombarded by Bara Gusuka's hypnotic sounds. Before Acha can execute them though, Riki intervenes and proves immune to Bara Gusuka's music due to his 600 million year space journey altering him and energy balls before destroying the Machine Beast with the King Victory Flash. Due to being left in pieces, Acha and Kocha are unable to enlarge the Machine Beast and he is deemed a failure.
However, the crazed Dr. Henna discovers Bara Gusuka's remains much to Acha and Kocha's delight and takes it back to his laboratory with him using a hyper LSI Chip and an "ultra super microchip" to resurrect Bara Gusuka as a wind-up creature. In doing so, Bara Gusuka gains the ability to chant instead of just whir the Machine Beast's chanting sends him to sleep. Marching into Tokyo proper, Bara Gusuka runs out of energy due to the wind-up but soon re-powers himself and puts much of southern Tokyo to sleep. Spotted by Shouhei and Juri after a lorry nearly hits them, he puts them to sleep and then Momo due to her wearing headphones. Despite his success in causing absolute chaos, Bacchus Wrath realizes that wind-up power is too unreliable and recalls the Machine Beast to get overhauled. Setting up in a lorry, Acha upgrades Bara Gusuka with a giant megaphone for a face whilst ripping out the wind-up functions. The Ohrangers follow and open the back of the truck but the upgraded Bara Gusuka emerges; now powered by the machinery inside the truck operated by Acha and Kocha which gives him a great power boost. Exposed to the full power of Bara Gusuka, the Ohrangers are soon asleep with even Riki falling victim once he arrives.
Turning up the volume, Bara Gusuka's music soon puts much of Tokyo to sleep but Dorin and Paku arrive with the lizard eating through the power cable. In doing so, the Machine Beast is crippled and his abilities to produce lullabies is destroyed. Even with more Barlo Soldiers as back-up, the Ohrangers swiftly dispatch the soldiers and dodge Bara Gusuka's energy balls before defeating him with the Ole Bazooka. Enlarged by Acha and Kocha, Bara Gusuka battles Ohranger Robo and Red Puncher but is swiftly overwhelmed by the Puncher Gatling before before they form King Pyramidder Battle Formation. Horrified by its size, Bara Gusuka is helpless as he is quickly restrained and obliterated by the Super Legend Beam.
Personality
Bara Gusuka is initially an extremely sleepy, lazy and tired Machine Beast who speaks almost exclusively in half asleep mutters and repeats of his own name. He never reacts to anything; not even his death sentence by Bacchus Wrath. In his first two forms, he spoke very simply; speaking only his name at first and then exclusively in lullabies. In his final form, Bara Gusuka is much more talkative and arrogant; mocking the Ohrangers and even facing down King Pyrammidas Battle Formation whilst other Machine Beast only cowered.
Forms
Powers and Abilities
- Durability: Bara Gusuka survived being shot out of the sky and then exploding in a Takonpas without a scratch.
- Sleep Inducement: By chanting his name, Bara Gusuka can quickly send people to sleep by hypnotizing them with the sound of his whirring motor. These included anything from the Ohrangers to the Barlo Soldiers and even Bacchus Wrath, Buldont and Hysteria.
- Omnipresence: Bara Gusuka's hypnotic whirring was heard in the Ohrangers' fighter jet cockpits despite them being in both different aircraft and far away.
- Energy Balls: Bara Gusuka can spray bright pink energy balls from his mouth which are strong enough to cause large explosions but failed to harm Riki.
Weaknesses
- Altered Bodies: Riki was completely immune to Bara Gusuka's hypnotic grinding due to his 600 million year journey through space altering him.
Arsenal
- Fists: Bara Gusuka has no weapons of his own but can wave his hands to enhance his hypnosis.
Powers and Abilities
- Hypnotic Lullabies: After being rebuilt by Dr. Hanna, Bara Gusuka can sing lullabies which are much stronger than his original abilities. These are stronger than his hypnotic whirring and could work through direct exposure or through headphones open to the tune as seen with Momo.
- Wind-up Empowerment: Bara Gusuka can wind himself up, causing himself to sing and spasm rapidly before calming down again.
Weaknesses
- Wind-up: Bara Gusuka's second form is powered by a wind-up key but, when it winds down, the Machine Beast is left powerless and weak.
Arsenal
- Fists: Bara Gusuka but can wave his hands to enhance his hypnosis like before.
Powers and Abilities
- Durability: Bara Gusuka's ultimate form is much stronger than his previous forms, being able to shrug off a jump kick from Riki as well as two slashes from the Super Crown Sword and Red Puncher's Puncher Gatling.
- Achacha Lullaby: In his ultimate form, due to having a megaphone around his head, Bara Gusuka's hypnotic abilities are at their strongest. He can sing lullabies which are many times stronger than his original abilities. These were strong enough to put all six Ohrangers to sleep in an instant with even Riki's altered body providing no protection.
- Transmission: Like before, Bara Gusuka could affect people listening through headphones open to the tune as seen with Chief Miyura.
- Energy Balls: Bara Gusuka can spray bright pink energy balls from his amplifier face which are much stronger than before; being able to knock down all six Ohrangers with one barrage.
Weaknesses
- Destroyed Connection: When Paku bit down on and destroyed Bara Gusuka's power cord, the Machine Beast lost his lullaby powers and was left largely helpless.
