Narrow Gauge

Narrow Gauge is a magazine story. The second part of this story is titled A Change of Plans.

Plot

Percy is very fond of the wildlife park; he once delivered its two giraffes, Gerald and Sally, and helped catch an escaped lion. He and the park manager often chat when Percy stops by and the two are close friends. The park manager plans to build a railway in the park and promised Percy that he would be the engine to run it.

One day, Percy notices an unusual man disembarking at the station to talk with the park manager. In the afternoon, he sees the man again, this time in the park with a tripod. His driver speculates that he is a surveyor.

The next week, the park manager tells Percy that he has finally got around to planning the railway around the park. Percy is excited to be able to see all the animals and learn all about them.

Later, Henry arrives with the rails and sleepers on his heavy goods train and the workmen begin building the line. When the park manager invites Percy's driver to have a look at the new line later, however, he discovers that the rails are narrow gauge, meaning that Percy is too wide for them.
