- For the module, see Grounds (module).

Grounds are the fundamental building blocks of maps in Transformice, providing the surfaces that mice and objects interact with. They come in various types, each with unique properties that affect movement, physics, and gameplay. The grounds are wood, ice, trampoline, lava, chocolate, earth, grass, sand, cloud, water, stone, snow, rectangle, circle, invisible, web, yellow grass, pink grass, acid, and honey.
Grounds can be static, meaning they do not move. Their characteristics are friction (how easily something can move across it), restitution (how far something is pushed away when it makes contact), and rotation.
Grounds can otherwise be dynamic, which possess many advanced qualities to allow it to move and be affected by gravity. Along with the properties of static ground, dynamic ground has mass (how much is affected by gravity), fixed rotation (whether it can freely rotate or stay in its original rotation), linear damping (how easily it falls on its own), and angular damping (how easily it is rotated by other forces).
List of grounds
Wood

Wood is the default and first ground in Transformice, existing since the game's launch on 1 May 2010 (V0). It has standard properties, meaning it does not affect mice or objects in any unusual way.
Wood has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.2. These are the same as earth, grass, cloud, rectangle, circle, yellow grass, and pink grass grounds.
Ice
- “Ice” redirects here. For the shaman item, see ice cube.

Ice is a slippery ground with no friction, causing mice to slide when moving and unable to wall jump on. It was added on 2 July 2010 (V0.33). When a mouse's starting point is on ice ground, the mouse will not be sliding on the ice. However, when moving right or left the mouse will continue to move on, because there is no friction to stop it. This also applies to physical objects present in the map.
Ice has a default friction of 0 and restitution of 0.2.
Trampoline

Trampoline is a bouncy ground that that sends things in the opposite direction depending on the velocity of contact. It was added on 2 July 2010 (V0.33), alongside map 70.
The maps which have trampoline ground are maps 70, 86, 144, 148, 162, 178, 208, and 209. Trampoline ground has many of the same features as the trampoline, a shaman object available in some numbered maps.
Trampoline has a default friction of 0 and restitution of 1.2.
Lava

Lava is a high-restitution ground which is brown-colored with orange cracks. It was added on 2 July 2010 (V0.33). Any mouse or object which touches lava ground will be sent rapidly in the opposite direction. Lava ground appears in maps 79, 80, and 84.
Lava has a default friction of 0 and restitution of 20.

Due to its high restitution, lava ground often sends mice off-screen. But by jump-canceling the momentum (by holding the ↑ or W key when contact is made with the ground), mice can survive and proceed in maps without the help of the shaman.
Chocolate
- “Chocolate” redirects here. For the chocolate plank skill, see Chocoplank.

Chocolate is a sticky ground that slows down mice as they run across it. It was added on 2 July 2010 (V0.33), alongside map 74.
There is currently only one vanilla map that has chocolate ground: map 74.
In the case of vertical chocolate ground, mice can run into the wall and "stick" to it while running into it. This makes wall jumping very easy to do. In the case of horizontal chocolate ground, mice without cheese can run on it almost normally, just slightly slower. This is why many mice jump constantly when running on it. With cheese, mice run extremely slowly, and they must jump to advance effectively through the map.
Chocolate has a default friction of 20 and restitution of 0.2.
Earth

Earth was added on 7 June 2011 (V0.158).
Earth has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.2. These are the same as wood, grass, cloud, rectangle, circle, yellow grass, and pink grass grounds.
Grass

Grass was added on 7 June 2011 (V0.158).
If the length of a grass ground is a multiple of 40, grass will appear on its left and right edges.
Grass has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.2. These are the same as wood, earth, cloud, rectangle, circle, yellow grass, and pink grass grounds.
Sand

Sand was added on 7 June 2011 (V0.158). Its slightly lower friction makes it more difficult to wall-jump than wood.
Sand has a default friction of 0.1 and restitution of 0.2.
Cloud

Cloud, also called ghost or transparent, is a ground that cannot be touched by mice. It was added on 26 March 2011 (V0.147). It does not affect mice directly, as if there was nothing there at all. However, other grounds and shaman objects will collide with it. This makes it useful for building (bridge supports), but also may hinder building by blocking off routes. Maps with cloud ground tend to be a challenge for both shaman and mice. Some old vanilla maps were changed, and cloud grounds replaced solid grounds to prevent trolling. Originally not available in the Map Editor, cloud ground was added to it on 7 June 2011 (V0.158).
Cloud has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.2. These are the same as wood, earth, grass, rectangle, circle, yellow grass, and pink grass grounds.
Water

Water is a blue-colored ground that was added on 7 June 2011 (V0.158). It is unique, in that it has no adjustable settings (friction, restitution, rotation, etc.). Apart from cloud and web grounds, it is the only ground that mice can move through, rather than colliding with them, as is the case with other grounds. The water bubble particle effect is shown when mice touch the ground.
Mice without cheese will "float" on the surface of the water, and will not stop moving as if they were on ice ground. Mice can make themselves "sink" by holding the ↓ or S key, but holding too long will cause the mouse to sink more than they want to, sometimes causing death. Mice with cheese will sink automatically, and cannot rise back up without the help of restitution grounds or the shaman.
Shaman objects will sink or float depending on what the item is. Planks, boxes, balls and trampolines will float, anvils and cannonballs will sink.
Maps featuring water ground are maps 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, and 134.

It is possible, but hard to accomplish, to wall jump up a vertical piece of water ground if you can go out to the side.

Stone

Stone is a gray-colored ground that was added on 16 December 2011 (V1.21).
If the length of a stone ground is a multiple of 40, stones will appear on its left and right edges.
Stone has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.
Snow

Snow is a ground that looks similar to grass ground, only that the top is covered by snow. For the Christmas 2011 event, from 16 December 2011 (V1.21) to 16 January 2012 (V1.23), the grass ground design was changed to snow. After the event ended, the original grass design was restored, and the snow design was repurposed for a new ground called snow, which was added on 16 January 2012 (V1.23).
Like grass ground, if the length of the ground is a multiple of 40, grass will appear on its left and right edges.
It has a friction of 0.05, making it easier to slide like ice and very hard to wall jump.
Snow has a default friction of 0.05 and restitution of 0.1.
Rectangle

Rectangle was added on 14 March 2012 (V1.30).
Rectangle has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.2. These are the same as wood, earth, grass, cloud, circle, yellow grass, and pink grass grounds. It has a default color of #324650.
Circle

Circle was added on 14 March 2012 (V1.30).
It appears in maps 149, 151, 175, 179, and 221.
Circle has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.2. These are the same as wood, earth, grass, cloud, rectangle, yellow grass, and pink grass grounds. It has a default color of #324650.
Web
- “Web” redirects here. For the Wildling skill, see Spidermouse.

Web is a sticky ground covered in spider webs that is very difficult to handle. It does not appear as an option in the Map Editor, but it can be added by editing the XML using ground ID 15.
The water bubble particle effect is shown when mice touch the ground.

Yellow grass

Yellow grass is a yellow version of grass ground with autumn leaves.
If the length of a yellow grass ground is a multiple of 40, yellow grass will appear on its left and right edges.
Yellow grass has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.2. These are the same as wood, earth, grass, cloud, rectangle, circle, and pink grass grounds.
Pink grass

Pink grass is a pink version of grass ground.
If the length of a pink grass ground is a multiple of 40, pink grass will appear on its left and right edges.
Pink grass has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.2. These are the same as wood, earth, grass, cloud, rectangle, circle, and yellow grass grounds.
Acid

Acid is a green-colored ground that was added on 22 October 2020 (V1.600). It kills mice upon contact.
Acid appears in maps 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, 189, 211, 212, 213, 223, and 226.
If the length of an acid ground is a multiple of 40, slime will appear on its left and right edges.
Acid has a default friction of 0.3 and restitution of 0.
Honey

Honey is an orange honeycomb ground that was added on 31 August 2023 (V1.775). After touching it, mice are sticky (have friction) for 5 seconds (indicated by ). Touching a water ground removes the stickiness from the mouse. It is possible to change the number of seconds mice are sticky for and the amount of stickiness by editing the XML.
Honey appears in maps 228, 229, 230, 231, 232, and 233.
If the length of a honey ground is a multiple of 40, honey will appear on its left and right edges.
Honey has a default friction of 0.1 and restitution of 0.3.
Trivia
- Invisible ground can be added by editing the XML, using ground ID 14. It shows up as a wood ground while editing your map.
