“ | My poor boy. Do you see what they did to us? How they hurt us? He's out there still. All alone. Each full moon they hunt him, armed with silver. Trying to put an end to a curse they inflicted upon themselves when they set my show ablaze six years ago. Stupid children. But my little Silas. My little white wolf. He must be protected. You must not follow this path. Do you understand? Remember how I've helped you all this time. | ” |
The Hierophant is a tarot card that can be found when playing as Abigail or Emma during Chapter 9 in The Quarry. The vision given by this tarot card occurs during Chapter 10.
Overview
A tarot card from the mid 15th century. The card depicts a religious figure wearing red robes, notably with a wolf's head. They sit on a throne holding a Papal Cross in their left hand, and raising their right hand as a religious blessing - two fingers pointing towards Heaven and two towards Earth.
Upon obtaining The Hierophant, when visiting Eliza at the end of Chapter 9 she will usurp control over your choice and show you The Hierophant's premonition instead. If you're unable to obtain the The Hierophant (if you retrieve more than one tarot card) you will be given your choice as normal.
Premonition
Unlike the other visions, The Hierophant will trigger a flashback cutscene showing the complete event of the fire six years before the start of the game. In it, Eliza, the head of Harum Scarum, approaches from the shadows seeing her show burning to the ground. Occasionally a gas canister will explode from the heat while she calls out her son's name; Silas.
After a few moments, another explosion will shower down debris and launch a metal stake towards Eliza- you can avoid being hit by successfully doing a QTE.
If the Player passes the QTE:
After the near miss, she sees a charred corpse lying beneath one of the carriages. It’s not yet clear who this person is, but as she approaches the body she notices a charred police badge lying atop of it, believing that the Hackett family maliciously destroyed the circus. After realizing this she douses herself in blood before walking into the flames shouting Silas' name.
If the Player fails the QTE:
Eliza is impaled by the steel rod but maintains her breath and consciousness for a few minutes more. Looking back around the fire, she notices a charred corpse and exclaims her intention on waiting for Silas. She slowly dies while a torrent of explosions and flames go off in front of her body.
Location
When controlling Abigail or Emma in the storm shelter, walk towards the staircase leading up to the two metal doors. Doing so will cause the camera perspective to switch quickly. This change will show the card on the wall, allowing you to pick it up. If you miss it, simply move back and walk towards the staircase again to have the camera switch back to the position.[1]
Trivia
- The Hierophant is one of two tarot cards that can show events that occur before the game begins. The other is The Hermit.
- The real Hierophant tarot card is not depicted as having a wolf-like figure, rather a pope-like figure wearing a golden crown.
- The Hierophant is the masculine counterpart to The High Priestess.
- The two fingers raised on the card are meant to represent a bridge between heaven and Earth, which in Silas' case represents not only his connection to Eliza, but how he's a spiritual creature walking on Earth.
- One of the Hierophant's meanings is captivity, which is connected to Silas being imprisoned by his own mother.
- Before the Hierophant kneel two followers, with his task being to pass down spiritual wisdom and initiate the two into his religious practices.
- Further reflecting Silas' lycanthropy; being the original werewolf and 'passing down' his curse.
- After Eliza's death, a burning tarot card falls down from the sky in view of the player- however it's a different suit depending on whether or not you fail the QTE that kills her. If you pass it, the tarot card is The Tower, but if you fail, the tarot card becomes the Hierophant.
- The Hierophant in tarot readings means conformity if upright and unconventionality if reversed.
- What Eliza says after the Hierophant's flashback ends seems to imply that the vision she was getting from the Hierophant card was of Silas being killed by Laura.
