Wall Break

Gimmick Wallbreak

Wall Break is a stage gimmick first introduced in Tekken 6.

Description

As its name implies, the attacker hits the opponent with a hard attack that shatters the wall and leaves them prone to another attack. An opponent does not need to be facing forward when triggering the wall break, and can still be triggered from the back or a side angle. Additionally, some throws, like Paul's Push Away, are also capable of triggering the wall break. It is possible to have consecutive Wall Breaks during a single combo and subsequent resets.

Although formally introduced in Tekken 6, destructible walls had their roots in Tekken 4 where several stages had walls that would be destroyed after enough hits; such as Shinjuku's phone booths or Parking Area's pillars, as well as "barriers" in the Tekken Force Mode's Jungle. Destroying the wall with an attack on the opponent would still leave them in a wall splat, but the wall behind would no longer be present to obstruct the attacker.

In the original Tekken 6, breaking the wall actually sent the opponent to the far end of the attacker's side of the screen. This was changed in Bloodline Rebellion where it was reverted to a wall splat opponent similar to Tekken 4 but with the wall behind no longer being present.

In Tekken 7, if an attack that triggers a Screw was used to break the wall, the attacker will no longer be able to use the Screw in the continuation of the combo or in the succeeding combo resets. It is also possible to trigger multiple wall breaks in a single combo. If a standing opponent is hit by a single-hit move that triggers Screw (e.g: Anger Hook), then the attacker will not be able to Screw for the rest of the combo. If a multi-hit string that ends with a Screw triggers a Wall Break against a standing opponent (e.g: Cloisonne), then the attacker can still use a Screw for the rest of the combo.

Hard Wall Break

The Hard Wall Break is a variant of the normal Wall Break introduced in Tekken 8. It requires two hits to trigger the break instead of the normal one or by one Heat Smash which can cause a Wall Break. If a Hard Wall Break is triggered, the opponent will now be thrown away from the attacker similar to Tekken 6, but will also be placed in a Bound with the player rushing towards them after.

Trivia

  • All attacks that will trigger a Screw or a Wall Bounce will also trigger a Wall Break.
  • The trigger of the Wall Break is the same as the Balcony Break.
  • Anger of the Earth had a glitch where, if performing two wall breaking attacks in quick succession, was possible to perform "two" wall breaks before the player and their opponent fell to the lower floor.
  • If two attacks that trigger a wall break trade, then the mechanic will not occur and the character whose back was at the wall will simply be splat normally.
