Buck was present in during the arrest of Street's mother where he gave him his watch to help calm him down. Buck would later help raise Jim Street in a foster home where he was raised until adulthood.

At some time, Buck was a part of the LAPD SWAT team. During his time in SWAT, he became best friends and somewhat of a father figure with Daniel Harrelson. In the episode, Bad Faith, It's referenced that Buck was in charge of a raid of a unstable and dangerous doomsday cults compound who intended on hurting innocent people. When Daniel came face to face with a kid with a gun and hesitated to take the shot when he had the chance, opting for negotiation, Buck wrote up Daniel's only reprimand on his record.

He was present in the flashback scenes in School, where he led his team through school shooting to stop the shooters. The mission was successful but at the cost of six students being killed and one of the two shooters being shot and killed. The second shooter was incarcerated for life without possibility of parole.

Buck was the commanding officer in the flashback scene in Ghost where the team go after serial killer who was targeting young LA actors trying to make it big. During the raid on the warehouse Buck and Hondo find a palate stacked with C4 explosives and Buck makes the decision to evacuate everyone in the building. This evacuation ended up costing the life of a young man that Luca wanted to save, this would follow him into the future.

Prior to the Raymont Harris shooting, In the Pilot, it is revealed that Buck personally had Street transferred from Long Beach Police Department to LAPD SWAT with the intent of mentoring him further as his SWAT leader.

After his career came to an abrupt end when he accidentally shot at an unarmed Raymont Harris who was at the wrong place and time, it is later revealed by Robert Hicks that he quit out of his own will to avoid a backlash controversy. After he quit, he tried to make easy cash to pay for Raymont Harris's "college tuition and the pain he had caused to the Harris family." Daniel and Jim were able to help him again to put the past at ease and later got him a job of working for a security firm. He would also ask Hondo to mentor Jim Street as he couldn't due to him quitting.

In Bad cop Buck asks Deacon if he would be the face of a new private security firm with his partner Owen Bennett. Its reveled by Owen that they chose Dec because of his medal the "Police Star" and believed that it would be good optics, it is also reveled that Owen planned to have Buck as a silent partner as his reputation would have harmed the company. In this episode Buck also alludes to a raid that Buck and Deacon both participated in that involved something that made Buck try to pull a "saved your ass" card when he brought up the company to Dec.

In season 3 episode 18, Buck contemplated suicide due to the events prior and after the Raymont Harris shooting. However, the team managed to track him down with team members: Street, Hondo, and Deacon started talking him down when they found him at a lake ready to kill himself. Each team member present spoke to Buck about how much of an impact he has on all of their lives and how hurt they would be if he went through with it. At the end of the episode, Dr. Wendy reveals that Buck is now getting counseling.
