Stephen was both a key provider and challenge asset for the Utara tribe, and his status was reinforced by his alliance with Shane Hattingh and Marian de Vos. Following the tribe switch, Stephen remained in the majority and managed to survive in the midst of Utara's losing streak in Immunity Challenges. However, he set off alarm bells when he downplayed his responsibility in stealing Gena Alkana's idol; the broken trust prompted Shane and Marian to blindside Stephen in favor of a more reliable number in David de Wet.
