Not to be confused with Hydran, a member of the Fundamental Four
The Hydra was a guardian of the Underworld in Greek mythology. It was said to have more heads than a vase-painter could paint and cutting off one of them would result in the Hydra growing two more from the stump.
Hercules mentioned that he once defeated the Hydra as one of twelve tasks set by Eurytheus of Arcos in order to enter Mount Olympus.
