A chest is an ancient item of furniture used for storing personal objects. They are most commonly associated with treasure and, inevitably, are often related to Captain Plunder in Sonic the Comic.
The most notable chest is the one given to Knuckles the Echidna that kicked off the World Tour of Mobius.
Knuckles' chest
A few years ago before Plunder first appeared in Sonic the Comic, the Sky Pirates attacked a sky freighter. Amongst the loot was a trunk filled with ancient parchments about the Floating Island, including information about the echidna's ancient language, technology and how to repair the island's systems. Also within the documents was a map pointing to the Lost Pyramid of Sandopolis, which led to Plunder and Knuckles' first meeting.
The two parted company, but they collided again when Plunder began searching for the Ghost Ship of Tantaragor. A violent storm destroyed his ship's mast, causing them to crash-land on the Floating Island. In order to convince Knuckles to raise the island up to the ship's level, Plunder promised to hand over the plans. Knuckles accepted, having become exasperated at his lack of understanding of the island's many odd devices, but was angered when Plunder revealed the trunk was back in Scourge Bay.
After an initial encounter with the Tantaror, Knuckles was united with the chest, where excitement about learning of his missing people overwhelmed it. Plunder offered to send Knuckles home by using the Idol of Tantaragor, but Knuckles insisted on rescuing the Mobian slaves on the ship. Plunder initially refused to hand over the documents once Ekkletos took back the idol, but Queen Zorabel rewarded Knuckles with his prize and sent him on his way.
World Tour
With no means of flying transportation, Knuckles began his journey across Mobius by boat. The only thing keeping Knuckles traversing the Mobian Channel was the thought of getting the chest home, but that was almost lost when Captain Claw destroyed the boat with his Octonaught. Knuckles rescued the chest and moved to a safe rock structure and set to work on defeating his foe. The chest somehow avoided being lost when Claw brought down every pillar and Knuckles forced Claw to row him and the chest home.
Knuckles continued to struggle with the heavy chest, even wondering whether it would actually be of any use in repairing the Floating Island's systems. Nevertheless, he took it to The Green Man, a pub in an unknown village, where Seth and Maurice took the trunk upstairs.
The chest moved on with Knuckles to the Great Mobian Prairie, where it came under more danger from a stampeding Apterix herd. It remained there during Knuckles trials with Boss Krouch, until Rooster returned it to his friend. The chicken also offered Knuckles a pterodactyl to get back to the Floating Island, an offer Knuckles gratefully accepted.
It accompanied Knuckles to Metropolis Park, but remained on the pterodactyl.
Usage
Once back on the Floating Island, Knuckles was sidetracked by the return of Doctor Ivo Robotnik and Doctor Zachary. Solving the problem with help from Sonic the Hedgehog and an electromagnetic pulse, Knuckles showed Porker Lewis the chest and promised to return the island to its former glory.
However, even with Porker's help, Knuckles continued to be baffled by the ancient technology, even with the scrolls presented in the chest. In time, though, Knuckles was able to fully restore the island's forcefield with every other system working perfectly. He also managed to convert the shaft containing the Chaos Emeralds into a fully-functional panel that controlled the entire island.

Other chests
Several other treasure chests have appeared in Sonic the Comic, always shown with Captain Plunder. A plot point involving two identical chests appeared in Captain Plunder and the Spice Maidens. Zorabel attempted to make use of the the Curse of Akotek by making him pick, expecting him to choose the wrong one. In fact, the treasure chest proved to be much more trouble than it was worth; gold spilled from the open box ended up disrupting Plunder's ship's forcefield, allowing Captain Tiberius to blow them out of the sky.
Another chest was seen in Plunder's Mystic Cave Zone hideout. Filch suggested sharing it with their missing crew, but Plunder decided to hire some new men.
