- "Merit adoptives can ask at any time to take the Trials. If they succeed, they become Trial-born."
- ―Caregiver Mitth'ali'astov, to Syndic Mitth'urf'ianico
Trial-born was a rank within Chiss families of the Chiss Ascendancy, situated between ranking distant and merit adoptive. Although Chiss could be granted the rank of Trial-born based on merits alone,[2] most reached the position by completing a series of tests known as the Trials. The Mitth family conducted its Trials in their homestead on Csilla.[1]
The rank of Trial-born was considered much more secure within a Chiss family than the lower, probationary rank of merit adoptive.[1] On rare occasions, a family may offer a highly desired individual to join their family at or above the rank of Trial-born, without even having to conduct the Trials.[2]
Following the skirmish above Solitair, the Defense Hierarchy Council demoted Mitth'raw'nuru from Senior Commander to Mid Commander.[1] However, due to the influence of Thrawn's Mitth family Patriarch Mitth'oor'akiord "Thooraki" and Supreme General Ba'kif,[3] Thrawn was made a Trial-born of the Mitth and given command of the heavy cruiser Springhawk.[1]
