Tarsus Valorum was a politician from House Valorum who served as the first Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic following the fall of the Old Republic. Serving during an era of change in the galaxy, Valorum's tenure saw reforms including the establishment of the Galactic Senate and the dissolution of the Republic Military. This period ushered in an era known as the Great Peace and the absence of all-consuming galactic conflicts. Valorum's legacy cast a long shadow over their descendants, including Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, who served until 32 BBY.
Biography
Tarsus Valorum was a member of House Valorum, a political dynasty that hailed from the Core world of Coruscant.[1] Valorum lived in a time of great galactic change;[2] by 1032 BBY,[3] the galaxy's dark age was ending, the Sith had been defeated and driven into near-extinction during the Jedi-Sith War, and a true Galactic Republic emerged from the fall of the "Old Republic" period of the Republic's history. Valorum presided as the first Supreme Chancellor of a new Galactic Republic, and Valorum's tenure saw the creation of the Galactic Senate and the disbanding of the Republic Military.[2]
The period that followed Valorum's tenure and galactic reforms became known as the Great Peace, in which conflicts were smaller and more localized—such as the Stark Hyperspace War and the Mandalorian Civil War—rather than all-out galactic conflicts that required more than local intervention or the involvement of the Jedi Order.[1] That period culminated with the High Republic Era.[4] The centuries after Valorum's time in office saw the populations of the Core Worlds becoming eager to expand their reach. Pioneers set out to transform worlds in the Outer Rim Territories, such as Eriadu, and bring them into the Republic.[2]
By 32 BBY,[5] House Valorum was a family of great influence across politics and business throughout the galaxy.[6] One of Valorum's descendents, Finis Valorum, served as Supreme Chancellor, but he was seen as a weak beneficiary of generational wealth[1] who faced baseless accusations of personal corruption until he was removed from office[7] in 32 BBY[5]—all while fighting the perception that he was nothing more than a shadow of Tarsus Valorum.[1]
Behind the scenes

Tarsus Valorum was first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the 2014 novel Tarkin, written by James Luceno, which identified Valorum as the first Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic.[2] Valorum was later formally identified as "Tarsus" in the 2019 reference book Rise of the Separatists.[1]
The character of Tarsus Valorum was originally established The New Essential Guide to Characters, a 2002 Star Wars Legends reference book by Daniel Wallace.[8] He narratively appeared in the 2007 Legends novel Darth Bane: Rule of Two, the second volume in the Star Wars: Darth Bane Trilogy by Drew Karpyshyn, as the Supreme Chancellor who reformed the Republic after the New Sith Wars.[9] Valorum's first visual depiction came two years later, in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, written by Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace.[10]
