A red giant was a star that had passed through the main sequence[1] and was in the process of dying, the transformation causing them to increase in size and potentially consume any planets orbiting them.[2] They became extremely large, and if a planet was close to them, that planet would be superheated and most likely uninhabitable by most species.[3] Red giants were smaller than red supergiants.[1]
An example of a red giant star was the sun in the Bastatha system, which made Bastatha almost completely uninhabitable.[3] Another red giant was Sokor.[1]
