- "You're looking for ravinaks, right?"
- ―A Mythrol to a landspeeder pilot
Ravinaks were large reptiles[2] that inhabited the frigid planet[3] Pagodon,[4] swimming underneath the ice.
Biology and appearance
They had two large tusks, a blowhole on top of their head, and gray skin. The creatures were known to be prevalent around the local port, as crews would often dump their gray holds out, creating a food supply for the carnivores.[3] Their thick hides protected them against attack, and a series of spikes on the animal's spine discouraged dorsal attacks. Ravinaks had two strong pectoral fins that ended with six sharp claws. They used these claws along with twin tusks to attack their prey.[1]
History
Around 9 ABY,[5] a ravinak attacked a landspeeder, destroying the craft and killing its human pilot. The ravinak then attacked the Razor Crest, a gunship flown by the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin, who was attempting to leave the planet with his Mythrol bounty. The ravinak grasped the landing gear of the Razor Crest as it was mid-flight and began pulling it down, but it was repelled by the Mandalorian's Amban phase-pulse blaster.[3]
Behind the scenes
The ravinak appeared in the first episode of the television series The Mandalorian, titled "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian,"[3] which was made available on Disney+ on November 12, 2019.[6]

SWCC 2019: 9 Things We Learned from The Mandalorian Panel on StarWars.com (backup link) establishes that The Mandalorian is set about five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 4 ABY. Therefore, the events of The Mandalorian, including the appearance of the ravinak, must have taken place around 9 ABY.
