- "It's a Kuati Signet. Blue kyber. Sky stone. The ancient world. Celebrates the uprising against the Rakatan invaders."
- ―Luthen Rael, to Cassian Jeron Andor
The Rakatans,[3] also known as the Rakata,[1] were an ancient amphibious humanoid species native to the planet Lehon[1] who ruled over the so-called Infinite Empire.[4] According to legend, they were the first to develop hyperspace travel.[1] At some point in ancient galactic history, the Rakatans staged an invasion, but were repelled by an uprising. A Kuati Signet embedded with a blue kyber crystal commemorated the uprising.[2] The Rakatan species was said to have eventually gone extinct as a result of corruption from the dark side of the Force.[1] They shared their name with mystical antiquities known as Rakatan wraith boxes.[5]
Behind the scenes
Canon and origins

The Rakatans were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the forty-fifth issue of the De Agostini magazine Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon, albeit only in its German release.[6] The species originated in Star Wars Legends in the 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The Rakata in that game were the fallen remnant of what had once been a galaxy-spanning empire that conquered, ruled, and decimated other species through the dark side of the Force.[7] The Force powered the Rakatans' hyperspace technology.[8]
Inconsistencies
Star Wars series
- "What a time for a light failure..."
- ―Unidentified Mon Calamari

In the forty-eighth issue of the 2015 comic book series Star Wars, written by Kieron Gillen, penciled by Salvador Larroca, and published by Marvel Comics[9] on May 23, 2018,[10] an unidentified Mon Calamari from the script[11] was mistakenly depicted as a member of the Rakatan species.[9]
Poe Dameron series
- "I don't even remember that dude and I'm pretty sure I would have remembered approving a Rakata."
- ―Matt Martin

Likewise, in the seventh issue of the 2016 comic book series Star Wars: Poe Dameron, written by Charles Soule, penciled by Angel Unzueta, and published by Marvel Comics[13] on October 26, 2016,[14] an unidentified "thug"[13] who was dubbed "generic alien extra #3457" and described as "mysterious background guy" by Story Group's Matt Martin on Twitter,[12] was also depicted resembling the Rakatans,[13] but their species remained unspecified.[12]

Matt Martin (@missingwords) on Twitter (post): "Yeah, you're not the only one to say that. I'd say it could be an alien extra who may or may not be a Rakata. But it's not DEFINITELY a Rakata. And like I said, the script calls out a Mon Cal but it's not stated in the issue specifically." (backup link)

He's "generic alien extra #3457" as far as I'm concerned. Could he be retconned to be a Rakata, sure. But as of now, he's just some mysterious background guy."
