A man-of-war was a type of warship that was used by the Chiss Ascendancy, the nation of the Chiss species, during and after the time of the Clone Wars—a war between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet used three types of man-of-war: the Firewolf, the Groundlion and the Nightdragon, ranging in smallest to largest in that order. Man-of-wars were equipped with engines and a hyperdrive, and possessed electrostatic barriers for shields. Its weaponry included spectrum lasers, plasma spheres and breacher missiles and the hull was constructed of nyix-alloy.[2]
In 19[3] and 18 BBY,[4] Admiral Ar'alani commanded the Vigilant, a Nightdragon man-of-war and the largest ship in the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet, as a part of Picket Force Six. Around the same years, Admirals Dy'lothe and Ers'ikaro of the Chiss Defense Force commanded the Groundlion man-of-war Venturous and the Firewolf man-of-war Bellicose, respectively.[2]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, a man-of-war first appeared in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, the first installment of Timothy Zahn's The Ascendancy Trilogy.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the man-of-war was first mentioned in the Heir to the Empire Sourcebook, published in 1992 by West End Games and authored by Bill Slavicsek.[5] It shares its name with the real-world man-of-war, a type of warship.[6]
