Jedi outposts were installations built by the Jedi Order, used by Jedi Knights to stay and study at when visiting locations throughout the galaxy.[4] During the High Republic Era, they were established across the planets of the Outer Rim Territories as part of a network. The outposts served as bases for Jedi exploration of unknown space, as well as the Order's main forms of outreach to the citizens of the Rim, providing protection to vulnerable populations. Each outpost was designed to reflect the environment and culture of the planet it inhabited; the outpost of the waterworld Mon Cala, for example, was a massive, seafaring raft grown from coralite. Three to seven Jedi of varying levels of experience were typically based any given outpost.[3]
It was common for Padawans to maintain their Jedi training at outposts throughout the galaxy. One such "outposted" Padawan was Bell Zettifar, who was stationed with his master Loden Greatstorm at the Elphrona Outpost[3] in the year 232 BBY.[8]
Centuries later, many Jedi outposts were shut down because they were deemed inessential to the Jedi, leaving many of the planets vulnerable to piracy.[4] Following the Great Jedi Purge, the Jedi hopeful Luke Skywalker discovered multiple outposts in his journeys, including one on Tempes during the Galactic Civil War.[6] Later, during the New Republic Era, he traveled to Elphrona outpost with his Padawan Ben Solo and explorer Lor San Tekka, where they encountered the Knights of Ren.[9]
