- "I did a voice for Star Wars […] was it General Grievous?"
- ―Oldman recalls his work on Episode III
Gary Oldman (born March 21, 1958) is an English actor who was cast to voice the character of General Grievous in the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Oldman worked with director George Lucas to record lines for the character, but later dropped out of the film after complications arose surrounding Oldman's status as a union actor, which meant he couldn't appear in films made outside of the Screen Actors Guild.[2]
Despite his departure, Oldman recalled his time working with Lucas as "terrific."[2] The role would later be filled by Lucasfilm employee Matthew Wood, who served as a supervising sound editor on Episode III.[3] The Cinema of George Lucas, a book written by Marcus Hearn and published shortly before the film's release, still credits Oldman as the voice behind Grievous.[4]
In February 2014, during an interview with Sky Movies while promoting the RoboCop remake, Oldman commented that he had been called to discuss a possible role in the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, though he noted that no deal had been made yet and that he would think about it during his flight back home.[5] Oldman would not appear in the final film.[6]
