- "All life is luminous, Pra-Tre. I realize that you are new to the Council, but we must never lose sight of that. We have heard their cry and must respond."
- ―Ela Sutan, to Pra-Tre Veter
Ela Sutan was a Caamasi female Jedi Master of the Jedi Order who lived during the High Republic Era.[1] By 382 BBY,[4] she[1] served on the Jedi High Council.[5] Sometime later, Sutan was present in the Jedi Council Chamber when the Council received a message of help from the Scalvi.[3]
Biography
Porter's report

Around 382 BBY,[4] the Jedi was present when Porter Engle informed the Council that Barash Silvain took a vow to distance herself from the Jedi Order to find out what the Force wanted her to do.[5]
Night of Sorrow
Master Sutan would take part in the infamous Massacre on Dalna, after she and fellow high council member Gluth Andoi felt that the Force was calling them to Dalna personally. They decided to go with a contingent of Jedi including master Rinn and knight Azlin Rell. Taking a large ship adorned with the Jedi symbol they landed in the Dalnan city Ferdan, thus inadvertently disturbing ongoing negotiations between Jedi Oliviah Zeveron and Matthea Cathley with former Path of the Open Hand leader Werth Plouth and Yana Ro, the two Path members subsequently fleeing. The two Jedi greeted the council members before Ferdan Sheriff Jinx Pickwick angrily approached the ship and urged all the Jedi to leave. After everyone finished introducing themselves, the Council members invited everyone aboard their ship to discuss what had been happening. After they assuaged Pickwick's concerns and all explained why they were there, Zeveron and Cathley notably recognizing the dead Jedi from Rell's story as the ones they had previously had mentioned to them by Path member Xander Cran, they all decided to head into the Path compound peacefully and diplomatically in the hopes of reaching an understanding.[1]
Master Ela Sutan and her group wandered through the surface of the Path compound, discovering it to be empty and sensing no one with the Force. Sutan yelled to announce who they were and what they wanted, but Path members, who were watching them via cameras, were ordered by the Mother, leader of the Path, to activate the trap waiting for the Jedi in the compound: enforcer droids. Though the droids emerged from the ground all around them and surrounded them, the Jedi pressed on, making their way forward to enter the caves. Seeing this, Path member Marda Ro decided to send the Great Leveler and its brethren out into the caves to hunt the Jedi.[1]
Later, freighted Jedi fighting the Path elsewhere on the planet, Creighton Sun, tried to send a message from the damaged and failing Lazuli out requesting help, only receiving a response from Master Sutan, who had made it into the caves of the compound with her group and was currently fighting the Path there. Sutan said that she could not help them, and Sun sent the message out again in desperation.[1]
Plea of the Scalvi
Master Sutan would be present during a Jedi High Council meeting where the members heard a message by the Scalvi requesting help. She urged the council to help them, emphasizing that all life was luminous and that their cry has been heard and must be responded to.[3]
Cibaba’s Memory

At some point during or prior to 241 BBY, [6] Jedi Padawan Tylera Yorrick connected to the memories of her master Cibaba through the Force, seeing one of his old memories of igniting his saber with Ela Sutan in the midst of laser fire.[7]
Powers and abilities
Ela Sutan was skilled enough in the use of the Force to have attained the rank of Jedi Master and acquire a seat on the Jedi High Council, as well as surviving the Night of Sorrow. Sutan wielded a blue single-bladed lightsaber.[7]
Behind the scenes
Ela Sutan first appeared in flashbacks in the first issue of the 2022 comic series Star Wars: Yoda. The issue was written by Cavan Scott, illustrated by Nico Leon, and published by Marvel Comics[3] on November 23, 2022. Prior to release of the issue, Sutan was included in a preview of the comic posted on StarWars.com on November 16 of the same year.[8]
The second issue of the 2024 comic miniseries Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Saber for Hire included a Caamasi Jedi within a Force vision experienced by Jedi Padawan Tylera Yorrick, though it was not confirmed to be Sutan herself.[7] The issue's artist, Rachael Stott, later confirmed that the Caamasi depicted in the issue was indeed Sutan on her Twitter.[9] Saber for Hire 2 was written by Cavan Scott, and published by Dark Horse Comics on May 29, 2024, as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[10] Phase III.[11]
