The Core Faction was a split political faction that was active within the legislative assembly of the Galactic Republic prior to the outbreak of the Separatist Crisis, which was organized by the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Its members advocated for an increase in centralized government power, such as the establishment of tax-funded programs, which prioritized the Republic civilization's expansion and elevation in a way that organized the rest of the galaxy similarly to the Core Worlds region.[1]
However, the Core Faction's ideals were diametrically opposed by the Republic Senate's Rim Faction, whose members voted against taxation and centralized power in favor of star systems' rights. Although opposed by the Rim Faction, the Core often saw support from the third Militarists group, which later became focused on restoring a centralized military for the Republic.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Core Faction was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in Rise of the Separatists, a 2019 supplement to Fantasy Flight Games' series of Star Wars Roleplaying products.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Core Faction was introduced in Cloak of Deception, a 2001 novel authored by James Luceno.[2] It was later identified in Luceno's 2012 novel, Darth Plagueis.[3]
