"Bloggins are avians with eyestalks and long tails. Their eyestalks let them see predators coming from far away, but this doesn't do much good because they might be the dumbest creatures in the galaxy. Their reaction to trouble is to panic, run around in circles squawking, and then try to fly (which they aren't very good at)."
―Rey, in her survival guide[2]

Bloggins were avian creatures that lived on the planet Jakku. Rey noted in her journal that bloggins may be the dumbest creatures in the galaxy.

Biology and appearance

Bloggins were avians with eyestalks and long tails. Their eyestalks let them see predators from a long distance. However, their tendency to panic, run around in a circle squawking, and failing to fly away left them with little choices.[2]

They traveled in flocks and provided food for several of the local villagers. Bloggins regarded whatever land they were occupying as exclusively theirs and responded negatively to interlopers, protectively pecking at other beings that traveled through it.[1] Their oil was used in lamps by the villagers of Tuanul.[3] Additionally, the villagers raised them for meat and feathers.[2] Rey also used bloggin-leather on the strap of her quarterstaff.[3]

History

Bloggin Survival
"The Sacred Villagers raise bloggins for meat, feathers, and oil. And if you're in Niima, Bobbajo the Crittermonger will have some trussed for sale on his back."
―Rey, in her survival guide[2]

A game existed called "whack-a-bloggin." One game stall in a festival on Serenno allowed you to play the game for two credits.[4]

Bobbajo the Crittermonger occasionally had some on his back for sale at Niima Outpost.[2]

The astromech droid BB-8 encountered several bloggins on the Tuanul settlement during its secret mission on the planet Jakku thirty years after the Battle of Endor. They pecked at him as he passed, but BB-8 rolled around and avoided them.[1]

Behind the scenes

Bloggins first appeared in the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[5] They were not identified on screen, and only identified as Bloggins in The Force Awakens novelization, written by Alan Dean Foster.[1]
