- "We are looking for a former Jedi by the name of Osha Aniseya."
"This is a cargo ship. We have no passengers."
"She's a meknek. Freelance outer ship repair. She bunks ship to ship."
"Why would we have mekneks here? The Republic has legislated that only droids may perform outer ship repair—" [Blex begins stammering as Fandar raises his hand] - ―Yord Fandar and Blex
Blex was a Neimoidian member of the Trade Federation who served as captain of the WD-2550 Whydah-class yield conveyer Fallon. In 132 BBY, the freighter needed shield generator repairs while in space and the mekneks Verosha Aniseya and Fillik were sent onto the hull to carry out the work. As the repairs took place, Blex complained about how long it was taking and called the mekneks disposable, which Aniseya and Fillik heard over the ship's comms.
A Jedi Vector then docked with the Fallon and the Jedi Yord Fandar and Tasi Lowa approached Blex on the freighter's bridge, informing the captain that they were looking for Aniseya. Blex denied that she was on board as the use of mekneks for outer ship repairs was against Galactic Republic legislature; however, when Fandar prepared to use the Force on the captain, Blex's Chief Officer Queya provided the location of Aniseya's bunk.
Biography
Cruel captain
- "What is taking so long? Activate the shield immediately."
"Uh… The, uh, mekneks are on it, Captain." - ―Blex and his first officer
Blex was a Neimoidian who worked for the Trade Federation during the High Republic Era,[1] serving as captain of the rugged and aging WD-2550 Whydah-class yield conveyer named the Fallon,[4] which was used as a cargo vessel.[3] In 132 BBY,[5] Blex fell behind on his revenue requirements shortly before a quarterly deadline and cut corners where he could in order to ensure a profitable run. He developed a stress ulcer that irritated his lung pods and caused him to frequently sigh in an exasperated fashion.[2]
When the freighter required repairs to its shield generators while in space and the job was given to the freelance human mekneks Verosha Aniseya and Fillik, despite Galactic Republic legislation stating that only droids could perform outer ship repairs. As the mekneks worked on the ship's exterior, Blex stood on the bridge and complained about the time the repairs were taking, ordering that the shields be immediately activated.[3]

Blex's Chief Officer Queya[2] then informed him that the mekneks were working on the issue, prompting Blex to call the pair expendable, unlike the ship's[3] precious[4] cargo. However, the mekneks could hear the audio from the bridge through their comms, and Aniseya responded over the bridge's speakers that while Fillik was disposable, she was not, causing Blex to groan. The mekneks then carried on with their work as a pressure valve blew, although Aniseya was able to repair it.[3]
The Jedi arrive
- "To what do we owe the pleasure of Jedi presence on our humble ship?"
- ―Blex, to the Jedi
As the repair work continued, a Jedi Vector approached the Fallon and circled the ship while Blex and Queya watched from the bridge, both groaning as they recognized the starfighter as belonging to the Jedi Order. The Vector then docked with the freighter and Jedi Knight Yord Fandar and his Padawan, Tasi Lowa, disembarked and entered the Fallon's bridge. The captain greeted the pair, but when the Jedi informed the Neimoidians that they sought Aniseya, Blex lied and claimed the vessel had no passengers or mekneks, citing the Republic legislation on outer hull repairs.[3]

Fandar then raised his hand toward the captain to use the Force, causing Blex to begin stammering and prompting the chief officer to quickly reveal where Aniseya's bunk was located. The Jedi then departed the bridge and arrested Aniseya, transferring her to[3] the DTE-CSA-17 Calaboose prison ship Palwick,[6] which had also docked with the Fallon.[3]
Personality and traits
- "The grease grubbers are disposable. Our cargo is not."
- ―Blex
While commanding the Fallon, Blex desperately desired promotion onto a larger class of ship that could make more profitable hauls; however, Queya considered him to have a dissapointing lack of foresight and strategy and was forced to cover his missteps until she could secure her own promotion elsewhere.[2]
Blex disregarded Republic rules and prioritized profits over the lives of his hired hands,[1] considering the mekneks on the Fallon greasy and disposable. He groaned both when having to listen to the mekneks and upon seeing the Jedi arrive,[3] which caused him to feel like credits and stock options were disolving before his eyes.[2] Despite this, he pretended to be welcoming and lied to them upon their arrival to hide the Republic legislations he had ignored. Blex had green skin and red eyes.[3] He stood 2.13 meters tall.[1]
Equipment
While on the bridge of the freighter he commanded,[3] Blex wore a draped blue and gold cloak of command with an aromatically infused collar and tiered golden epaulets with frills. His head was well-adorned with a black captain's campanulate hat with a golded crown and golden deocrations. Inside the cloak, he concealed a sonic stunner for self-defense.[2]
Behind the scenes
Blex first appeared in "Lost / Found,"[3] the first episode of the television series The Acolyte, which aired June 4, 2024, on Disney+.[7] The character's name was not spoken in the episode but appeared in its credits. Performance artist James Henri-Thomas physically portrayed the character[3] with Robin Atkin Downes providing the voice.[8] Mike Quinn provided the on-set voice reference and controlled the character's lip-syncing while Colin Purves and Adrian Parish controlled the eyes and brows of Blex's mask,[9] which was designed by Tim Berry.[10] The scenes on the Fallon were shot at Shinfield Studios,[11] England.[12] Prior to the release of the episode, Blex was revealed in a trailer exclusively shown at Celebration Europe[13] during the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase on April 7, 2023.[14]

Mike Quinn (@MikeQuinnOfficial) on Facebook (post on June 9, 2024): "🤩 I can finally reveal some of my involvement in the new smash series The Acolye, the new Star Wars show on Disney+. In the first two episodes alone I had three speaking characters and worked on three additional non speaking characters. It was intense I must say and both an immense privilege and a massive responsibility. This picture depicts the three dialogue characters in episode one, where I provided animatronic lip-synch and on set voice acting (reference guide voices) with the principle cast. One was for the noodle bartender, another for Captain Blex, the Niemoidian and the third for the prison convict. Performing wonderfully in the actual costumes themselves were Liam Cook (noodle guy and convict) and James Henri-Thomas (Niemoidian). Eyes and brows expertly performed by Colin Purves and Adrian Parish. Beautiful work from all the CFX team as always! Everyone worked so damn hard on this show and I love how it's turned out. So happy for everyone involved! 🥳" (backup link)

I had such a great time working with the legendary Mike Quinn and Colin Purves to bring Captain Blex to life in the new Star Wars series, The Acolyte. An amazing build by Tim Berry - I was in awe of how lifelike the animatronics were on this one. Special thanks to Derek Arnold and everyone in Neal Scanlan’s CFX Department for all their work and for the opportunity to step into my first ever cast creature.
